I think a better analogy is that the current situation is akin to everybody at a conference wore nametags … on their identical black burqas. With avatars, you can see their faces. No. With avatars you get to see a static picture of their face, expression frozen whether that person is happy, sad, angry or bored.

The point is to give something visual to tie to individuals. You know, for those of us crazy visual learners. Fuck us for daring to not have brains that work the same way as yours, right? I mean, if names are good enough for you, then by god, they must be good enough for all of us. :rolleyes:

First of all, we already do get by on something far better than a ‘list of attendees’. We already do wear nametags at this ‘conference’. We each have a distinct user name. No need to doodle silly pictures on these ‘nametags’. You really don’t see random artwork too often on nametags at most conferences (outside of maybe Cosplay and Lolzcats conventions).

No, but you do get a face above the nametag. All we get here is nametags.

1. Sometimes nametags at conventions have head-shot photos, sometimes they don’t. Similarly, some message boards have avatars, some don’t.

2. I wouldn’t have a problem with people having the option of including a small, uniformly-sized, head-shot photo next to their user name–you know, just like they do with nametags. No Lolzcatz or vacation photos there!

You are probably aware that unlike business nametags, the ‘nametag pictures’ on message boards (avatars) are often random images–not photographs of users.

Please explain how it hurts you in any way whatsoever to allow people to upload avatars if they choose to do so.

That’s the way it is now and it doesn’t hurt me a bit. In their profiles Dopers can, and do upload pretty pictures for people to look at and I think that’s great. In fact, I wish more people would do so.

As long as avatars aren’t taking up space and interfering with the conversations in the fora, everything’s cool. Reminder: **WE ALREADY ALLOW AVATARS. ** They are located in the user profiles.

Really, on message boards with avatars, people don’t talk about them much. I can guarantee you that if avatars were enabled here, there would probably be at 100 instances of tired SDMB memes uttered (Hi Opal!, 1920s style death ray, etc) for every time someone makes note of an avatar. Even then, why would the rare mention bother you that much? Just filter it out, like some other Dopers do with the ceaseless Hi Opals and Monty Python quotes they can’t really do anything about.

Nothing is worse than dope memes. The worst one? “This is the smartest board on the internet!” Yes, if the internet is solely comprised of the straightdope.com domain, and even then it’s a tie.

I post on a couple of boards and all of them except this one use avatars. The only place where anybody is actually discussing avatars is in art threads or here.

Seriously, places with avatars typically remark on them about as often as people remark on sigs. They’re there, they add a little more character, but it’s just part of the general presentation of the poster and you can turn them off.
