Better yet – gay marriage. People keep talking about how gay marriage will destroy the institution of marriage, but they have yet to prove this.

The avatar owner. I want to use an avatar here, I go and upload said avatar to photobucket, then when I want to post it here, I link it from there. Easy-peasy.
Good analogy. Those opposed to SSM also cite the “ick factor” - they don’t care that they can’t see gay people having sex, but they’re squicked out about the idea.
There’s also those that think the government will be “forcing people to accept gay marriage”, even though nobody is forcing anybody to “gay marry”, and that nothing will change for married straight couples if gay marriage becomes legal.
I am going to repeat something I said on Giraffes board, and I repeat it in all seriousness.
Its not hard to get the impression that the only people pushing to implement Avatars here are those posters that also post regularly at the Giraffe boards. Thats not surprising I suppose, Giraffes board allows avatars, so you like them, are used to them, and feel they would improve this board as well.
Thats all fair enough, except that I also strongly get the impression that the vast, vast majority of the rest of the SDMB posters do not give a toss about avatars, this is a total non-issue for them.
So we have a situation where a group of people are pushing for something the rest of the board doesnt want to know about.
Now, I mentioned the Giraffe board for a reason, to show that you are pushing for a feature that you already get to enjoy on a very similar board. And that brings me to my question.
Why are you pushing this issue?
Seriously, why? You arent fighting for something the majority wants, my poll showed that at least. Ed has aleady said they wont be happening, and you already get avatars elsewhere. Not only that, but as I see it, if avatars were implemented tomorrow, I bet you would see only about one hundred people actually bother to have one, hardly worth all the hassle.
Is it all just recreational outrage? Fun to point and laugh at the backward SDMB, make up ever more funny analogies?

I’ve never visited the Giraffe boards, and TSDMB are the only boards that I do visit with any regularity.
I argue in favor of choice in the matter, more so than pro-avatar specifically, because the more I read in the debate on the subject the more I see it seems to be a bunch of people just trying to impose their point of view on another bunch of people even though their individual choices on the matter would have no real impact on each other.
But I would certainly like an avatar since the subject is on the table and I would be interested to see the avatars of others. Its a simple wish and not the end of the world should TPTB deny it, not something I would fight for with more than a casual interest.
But anytime I see a mob mentality trying to impose their preferences on others despite not being affected by them, I tend to root for the underdog.

Proof? Its my impression only, like I said in English in my post. I would suggest you check the most posted list for this thread though, see who is in double figures, it seems to show a trend.
You know where the Pit is.
ETA: The most posted list doesnt really show a trend I guess, I just checked it. You may ignore that, or not, whatever you want.
Now that this debate has run it’s course and truly jumped the shark, let’s debate whether or not the board should enable tags. It’ll be interesting to see how much that topic can be blown out of proportion.
Hmmm, I also recall you saying over at Giraffe that you thought it would be fun to start a board war over it. I certainly didn’t ignore THAT. 
You can either pit me, or apply some introspection and perhaps answer the question, its up to you.
For anybody curious, in the thread Guin is referencing, my next words after “board war”, were:
“I am going to tell them you are a spy, the message board equivalent of the plucky little ginger haired girl that hangs around the other side looking for candy and information.”
You know something, I find I am not too concerned that people will think I am trolling here, or trying to stir up trouble. Can’t think why.
I don’t post on Giraffe’s board and I’m pro-avatar.
I get the impression that most of the anti-avatar folks have spent very little time on other fora. So many of their fears never happen on them. “Oh noes…it’s a goatse avatar!!!”. I guess this Chicken Little panic does guarantee some jerk will create one but the childish avatars would pass in a month or two).

I get rather the opposite impression - the pro-avatar people don’t spend much time HERE.
This is exactly the board where you will find goatse, epilepsy-inducing flashing .gifs, etc.

It’s ok, but you need to think about whether or not the avatars would be viewable by default.
I oppose your plan because I view Avatars as unnecessary and I’d rather the board opt out of a 60 day recurring drama.
You could argue for a MPSIMS-only policy forever and ever amen, but I figure if you give the pro-Avatar crowd an inch, they will take a mile. However should the board adopt this policy I would probably sign up, perhaps with something like this.
FTR, I frequent other boards that have avatars and I would guess that most of my fellow opponents (60%, according to the notorious IMHO poll thread) have also been exposed to such flora.

Yeah I don’t post on Giraffe’s board either. And like I said I’ve been on message boards since 1994 and was happy to see avatars when they arrived. I’ve never seen goatse as an avatar.
The best bet on a vbulletin is to moderate new posters. We do that on my (very small) board.
Missed the poll, but I hate avatars and the visual clutter they produce. They’re almost as annoying as lame-ass sigs. That said, if there’s an option to keep 'em on or off, I suppose I have no real objection to it, if it only shuts up the damn pro-avatar contingent.
