Jonathan Coulton Baby Got Back .
Yeah, I know, it’s like, there’s this blank, for a 3 day period when we discussed this.
Weird.
Oh, and that Yes cover was amazing. Thanks for that.
Dude that rocks. I’ll add:
Dynamite Hack - Boyz n the hood
Definitely beats the original into a cocked hat. Good call.
This Mortal Coil’s version of ‘Song To The Siren’ by Tim Buckley
actually, it’s by The Cocteau Twins, really.
I’ll raise that to Matt Weedle’s “Hey Ya”
Also, Nanci Griffith’s cover of “Morning Song to Sally” (Originally Jerry Jeff Walker)
My bad. I just re-joined the SDMB recently and wasn’t here for the beginning of that thread. I did try a search before posting, but the initial results I saw didn’t seem all that relevant and I didn’t want to wait 5 min to try again. Sorry.
The studio version is even better. Unfortunately I couldn’t find that on Youtube.
I love the video for this one! It totally fits what the song would be if they upped the tempo to that of the original.
Something I’ll bet no one else reading this even knows about: A little-known band called Glass Moon did Peter Gabriel’s “Solsbury Hill” and in my opinion it is far, FAR better than Peter’s version.
Oh yes. You can almost feel the song as much as hear it.
Also, I came to contribute a very obvious one-- Stevie Ray Vaughan’s cover of Jimi Hendrix’s Little Wing. Far better than the original, IMO.
One that nobody will care about is I Turn My Camera On, a Spoon song covered by Rock Kills Kid. The vibe is totally different, but similar enough that I recognized it immediately, and I think that’s cool. I don’t like when people cover a song and do nothing new for it.
Cat Power - Satisfaction (Rolling Stones)
Cat Power - Space Oddity (has this been released full length yet?!?!) (David Bowie)
The White Stripes - Lovesick (Bob Dylan)
The Racontuers - Crazy (Gnarls Barkley)
Both Marvin Gaye’s and Creedence Clearwater Revival’s versions of “I Heard it Through the grapevine.” I think I Prefer CCR.
Zappa’s version of “Stairway to Heaven” is pretty cool.
Lots of people love Springsteen’s version of “Jersey Girl,” but I prefer the original Tom Waits.
Joe
That’s good enough for me.
Some ones that I like, and that are good enough for at least “aw…”:
[ul]
[li]“Spooky” by Dusty Springfield (featured in “Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels”, a version of the Classics IV vocal version.[/li][li]“Country Road”, a rhythmic version of “Take Me Home, Country Roads” by Toots and the Maytals.[/li][li]“Aserejé” (The Ketchup Song), a lively version (any of about 7 different versions) of “Rapper’s Delight” by Sugarhill Gang.[/li][/ul]
Oh, and of course “Please Don’t Touch”:
Original (by Johnny Kidd and the Pirates)
and the way better version by Motorhead/Girlschool
