If you’ve heard Bill Engvall’s newest single, you know what I mean.
Name something truly awesome…not just “wow, that’s nifty”-type things, I mean jaw-droppingly incredible, awe-inspiring stuff.
My vote: The “bubble” at the instant of a thermonuclear (H-bomb) explosion…it’s just…amazing. One of the physicists watching the shot said: “It looked to me like a diseased brain up in the sky…It was a pretty sobering and shattering experience.” Sobering, indeed.
Note: There’s gotta be a better pic of one of those somewhere, but I can’t find one Help?
One thing that stands out in my mind is watching
the moon set. It was 2 days past being full, and
it was a hazy burnt orange color as it sank
behind the pine trees. What made it so cool was
the fact that once it reached the tops of the
trees, you could actually (or at least had the
illusion) see the moon sink. Yikers, that was
cool.
That photograph taken by the Hubble space telescope (picture) is so cool. Not so much the actual PICTURE, but the concept of being able to see galaxies and things the way they were 11 or 12 billion years ago, and that if we were to look far back enough, we’d be able to see the Big Bang. AWESOME.
I agree that the Hubble photos are amazing (you just need to realize the scale of it all!)…ditto for most astronomical images…comet impacts leaving scars the size of the Earth, solar prominances which dwarf the Earth, etc.
