B-52 down at Edwards AFB

This is a sad day for me . . . I think one of my really good AF friends (read ‘brother’') was onboard.

We’re circling our tight-knit group of ‘brothers and sisters’ around his family right now. . .

I hope not, but if so, I’m sorry for your loss.

Oh no… I’m so sorry. Maybe it will turn out otherwise.

For those who are lost–very sad and hard to comprehend…

I never knew anyone who flew B-52s, so I’m not that close. But I did work at EAFB in the '80s, and always like to see the B-52s coming toward me on takeoff as I was driving to RMCC. Lots of smoke.

It was my turn to work the snack bar one week at March AFB. The crew that got a certain B-52 ready to go had just walked in to get some hot coffee and a pastry and watch their bomber take off that morning. They were my friends. The flight crew that were on that plane were my friends. Coffee was poured, and we sat down to watch the plane take off.
Then climb.
Then twist to its side.
Then fall like an arrow.

It was months until it was found that the fault fell on a very defective engine on one of the wings, months of horrible guilt on behalf of my friends until they were officially cleared…but still felt because grief and guilt are not logical in any fucking way whatsoever.

Thank you, and thank you for this. This loss is bringing back to memory some older ones too.

Shit.

Hold on to each other (which you are doing.)
