I’m going to be going to visit my brother in Berkeley in February. Since he is a starving student, and I’m going to be travelling with my girlfriend, I need to find someplace to stay that is not his floor. Does anyone have any recommendations or cautionary advice regarding B&Bs in and around the Berkeley campus?
When I used to live in Berkeley, I usually put guests up at the Durant Hotel or Shattuck Hotel. Both are close to campus. The Shattuck is on Shattuck Ave, basically downtown but still just a couple of blocks south and west of campus. The Durant on Durant Ave (see the pattern?) a block south of campus and a block east of Telegraph Ave, more the student shop/bar area.
I remember seeing a few B&B signs around, but never patronized them. I remember there was one on Telegraph down near Andronico’s, but the conventional wisdom was that it was a front for a bordello. YMMV.
If you’re not strictly looking for a B&B, I’ll try to dig up the name of the charming small hotel where I stayed the night before a friend’s wedding last year…it was literally across the street from campus, conveniently located next to a yummy coffee and bagel place.
