Here (YouTube link) is an interview with SRV on UK TV. About 1 minute in he plays snippets of both Freddie King’s and Eric Clapton’s approach to Hide Away. Very insightful, and sounds amazing, even though the interviewer is a git (yeah, SRV was really influenced by the Mersey beat, right… )…
Just curious here but WHY do you feel like a complete moron for admitting this? I don’t know why you would feel like a moron for not owning something that didn’t interest you until this moment. Why would you? Do you feel like a moron for not owning the million other “must-haves” out there in other genres like metal or country or even rap?
Heh. Good question. Because I have such great taste in music (sic)? I don’t feel bad about not having the “classics” in crappy (sic) genres, so my ignorance about country, rap, and metal bothers me not a whit.
Are you up on your blues from other musicians and just lacking with B.B, or is your lack of experience ‘across the board’? If so I would like to recommend you a couple of must haves from more contemporary blues artists as well.
Stevie Ray Vaughan Live at the El Mocambo is a must have DVD for starters.
Jeff Healey’s See The Light album is particularly excellent and has an awesome Hideaway cover.
I’m sure Wordman and I can put together a must have blues catalog spanning the history if you get froggy.
Hmm - I guess I got **twick’s **comment instinctively. I love music, but recognize that there is too much out there to take in, so a lot of stuff slips through the cracks. I regularly go back and check out neglected-by-me artists from years ago when I get a ping - some reference on the SDMB or in an article…
Because I actively do this, I have started to get a feel, based on how they were written about, how they interview and how their songs and music are described whether I will like them. When I finally listen - and it turns out I do, in fact, really enjoy their music - I can feel like a moron, because I always had a feeling I would like them. Darn it - I could’ve had more time with them!
Out of 20 artists, maybe 2 - 3 become heavy-rotation faves - definitely a ratio I am okay with…
Didn’t ultrafilter have his series of “best of” lists in each genre, including blues? That would be a great place to start.
Also - it depends on the type of blues we are discussing. Although the structures are the same, there is a wide chasm between scratchy, fingerpicked, primitive acoustic country blues and super-cool, 17-piece-including-horn-section urban jump blues. Both are wonderful, but really are chalk and cheese…
I’m a middle-aged white gal - havin’ to work on the holidays
Yes, I’m a middle-aged white gal - havin’ to work on the holidays
I can’t be Dopin’ on the blues - I’m too busy livin’ them today…

…why I listen and critique, and don’t actually write original stuff…
My rhythm section would protest (say “no more ‘boo-gie’ numbers!” with a strong Brit accent, and you’ll sound like them) so we’d have to work around that!
And believe me - you wouldn’t have wanted to see us last week. We played a private holiday party (about 250 people) and I was cut off at the knees by a stomach virus. I was literally draped over a toilet a few hours before going on. But what can you do? We were the entertainment! So I bucked up and played. The end of the night was not pretty…
