B.C. 5/2 - Johnny Hart tosses dig at KKK

I haven’t been paying much attention to the comics lately so I only just caught this.

Cute strip, I suppose, but why is it noteworthy? It’s not as if the Ku Klux Klan has ever been a sacred cow. The Klan has been mocked (rightly) in popular culture for decades.

Or are we supposed to be surprised that Johnny Hart (a conservative, evangelical Christian who’s often slammed in these boards for his beliefs) shares America’s general disdain for the Klan?

We’re supposed to be surprised that Hart is being topical for a change.

Call me when Hart takes potshots at the Republican Party or the Christian right, then we’ll talk.

Heck, even Aaron McGruder takes aim at black people…

I won’t swear to it, but I strongly believe that that strip is a rerun from several years ago.*

If it is, then so much for topicality, I guess.

*[sub]Bear in mind that I’m the same guy who remembers Peppermint Patty (Peanuts) call things “dorks” and “dorky” over a period of several weeks. So accept this at your own risk.[/sub]

You might be right about it being a repeat, I noticed one of the more recent Sunday strips is really old. Still, it’s better than his usual preaching and bad puns.

“I don’t get it…if B.C. is a caveman, how can he celebrate Ash Wednesday?”

Come to think of it…are there actually any black cavemen in the strip?

What’s that thing in the middle frame? Looks like a mosquito wearing spectacles.

LOL
That’s the schoolmarm ant.

“BC” is like “Doonesbury” for me. If I want preaching, I will go to church. And I haven’t been there in a long time. I read the comics to be amused.

I used to enjoy BC. When I was a kid it was one of my favorite strips. It’s still funny sometimes, but the preaching gets me down, and the interview with Johnny Hart that appeared a while back was really sad.

Well, there’s your first problem.

Ah, yeah I hate to be that guy, durn it. I am just always amazed that things like “BC” stay on and on when there is really funny stuff out there, and Calvin is gone forever. I remember Foxtrot being my favorite post-C&H, is that still around?

Hijack: I remember that too. Early 70s. But was it Peppermint Patty or Marcie? It was definitely in conversations between the two. Why do you doubt your memory? Or should I be doubting mine?

Topical? That strip could’ve been run at any point in the last 130 years or so.

Hey, the last time I ever red the strip regularly, the only cavewomen in the strip bore the names “fat broad” and “skinny broad”.

Wow - taking on the KKK? That’s pretty radical. Watch out, Hitler, you might be next. What would impress me would be if he stopped having a character called “Fat Chick”.

On preview, looks like it’s “Fat Broad” - same difference.
