In the GQ gone to IMHO thread about under what circumstances a man might be held liable for child support I tested the theory of doing a vanity search on a three-letter user name. I used your name because I could not think of another. Czarcasm believes I intended insult to you, and because he found it I am now worried you did too. Please believe me, no insult was intended. The theory I wanted to test is from my hijack of Mynn’s Bull and Shit thread and these posts in particular, in case you don’t want to read the whole thing.

Have you ever heard such admiration and appreciation of the intellect and sense of humor of any other poster that was thinking of leaving?
I mean, talk about applause! Have you any idea how cool people here (even me 
) think you are? How much you are envied among the lesser mental lights, which is to say nearly everyone else. (I say “nearly” because there are a couple of mathematicians here that might give you a run for your money…but you know what I mean.

I have never contributed to a thread before when someone said they were contemplating leaving. I always felt it was their decision. I also am outside the loop as to why you are unhappy or feeling stress here, but it apparently has something to do with being outed in some way and having to argue with people as a result.
Can you not just simply decline to respond? (And as an aside, I, too, would be happy to join with everyone else in letting newbies know they are out of line if begin to get out of line with you.)
So, anyway, I hope you’ll reconsider. I would hope that the tremendous outpouring of appreciation for you in this thread will perhaps convince you that you get far more kisses than swats by being here and that you’ll decide to stay and contribute here.
This place truly would feel your absence, myself included.

So as you can see, I have a limited amount of time and patience and I tend to get annoyed and bite peoples’ heads off. What SolGrundy said is true: in good conscience, I can’t just let the transsexual threads go by, I feel obligated to step to the plate and try to correct misperceptions (like, we’re all alike: can you think of any two people with less in common than, say, KellyM and I?).
About 20 years ago, Jan Morris told me she refused to discuss the subject with me any more: “I’m sick to death of it,” she said, and I was shocked and hurt, but now that I’m an old lady, too, I know just what she meant. It was more than half my life ago, I never even think about it until the subject comes up, and then it’s usually something depressing or infuriating.
I’m not leaving the Boards, but when my renewal comes up (for financial reasons if nothing else, I am in such tuition debt), I dunno if I’ll be back.

Several things occur to me, none of which are likely to be too popular with the readers of this thread.
First, Eve does reveal a lot about herself - through photos, through text and through her screen name even. The message is quite clear and consistent: I am woman. (The Hebrew word rendered as Eve in English means woman.)
Other posters, especially her supporters, pick up on this and the word ‘lady’ is perhaps the single word most commonly used to describe her. Reflect on this a bit, and it might strike you that this further marks Eve out. Most of the other long time posters are just that - posters. Their sex, or gender, is irrelevant, or downplayed. There are still many old-timers (the vast majority in fact) whose sex I don’t know.
Now, transsexuality, or transgenderism, IS a controversial subject, like it or not. It is also a subject for which the science is not conclusive and for which emotions run high when the matter is brought up. That is the way things are. We are creatures of passion as well as of reason.
Eve also has very strong opinions about things and expresses things often with considerable language power. As of course do many others here. Like them, she must be willing to take it as well as to give it.
I mention my daughter in a thread on homosexuality, and someone writes to express his or her wish that she turns out a lesbian. Fair enough. Passions run high and I have entered a debate about a matter that is very controversial. I enter the kitchen. I take the heat.
We have rules here, and if people break them - with respect of me or Eve, or anyone - they will be applied. Posts are reported; action is taken.
I just suspect a bit of a desire to have it both ways with regard to both Eve and her many fans. If Eve truly desires to be anonymous on a message board, then it would I think be as an anonymous poster rather than as an “anonymous dame”. If gender is really neither here nor there, the Net offers perfect cover for those who wish to take part in discussions through it.

Look, the Golden Rule here is “don’t be a jerk”. Is it so out of line to say that questioning someone’s humanity because of their sexual choice or because of a decision made to correct a physical flaw or because they’re left-handed or red-haired is being a fucking jerk?

I do understand about how real life has to come first, and circumstances can keep you away from the board. But dammit, you’re interesting! You can stroll into a thread, plunk down one little sentence, and light bulbs come on above people’s heads, smiles creep across faces, and in half a dozen time zones, beverages of all sorts are wiped from computer screens.
If you have to go, we’ll understand… but things won’t be the same and we’ll miss you.

Eve, my opinion won’t change your mind, but let me point out that you’ve talked about leaving, and the universal response has been Please, Don’t. That contrasts sharply with virtually every other “threat” to leave that this board has ever seen. Anyone else would get “Don’t let the door hit you in the ass on the way out.”
For heaven’s sake, you’re the Mayor here! Consider your People!
