Babe. Ever released on DVD in widescreen?

Title says it all.

Presumably the movie about the pig, not the movie about the Bambino or the TV movie about a certain multitalented gender-barrier breaking athlete.

Such a thing might exist for the pig movie, but I’m having trouble finding it without the second movie bundled, and the reviews seem hazy on whether the first movie is in fact full or wide.

(I’m sure it’s not the point of your question, but the Bambino is in widescreen. Mildred Zaharias has not yet had her day on DVD.)

<completely irrelevant fact>
My mother’s one of the extras in Babe, in the scene at the fair.

Babe(widescreen)

It’s not available now, but it is available widescreen in regions outside the U.S.

So I can buy a USED copy at Amazon. That completely sucks. Thank Gawd I have a region free DVD player.

Is there any reason on earth why one of the greatest movies of the last ten years isn’t availble in a decent DVD edition?

/I guess they needed the production capacity for making the DVD version of “Bewitched the Motion Picture”.
//I think I just threw up a little in my mouth.

Well, congrats for guessing it was the pig movie. That’s why I didn’t call it “The Babe”. And anyone who watched a bad John Goodman movie (albiet probably his best) about sports and got it in widescreen would probably wonder “where the rest of the picture was at, I paid my money, I want to see the whole thing!”, and some TV movie (shot in 4:3) about a depression era woman with issues that is not even available on video is obviously not what I am talking about either, so thanks Sherlock. Glad you could find all those IMDB references. I am very impressed.

As to the url, the text says “widescreen” but the product details say 4:3.

Criterion, are you listening? This movie deserves a re-release with the full treatment, thanx.

It’s what we call a “joke,” Captain Sarcasm.

Chill.

when I read the OP, I immediately thought it was referring the 1982 porno of the same name, featuring a young Ron Jeremy

Have you ever seen “The Big Lebowski”? I haven’t seen “The Babe”; however I doubt his performance in the latter surpassed the former.

Goodman isn’t a bad actor; he just has acted in pictures that range from terrible to great.

Babe wasn’t filmed in widescreen, although it was shown matted to the standard 1.85 : 1 theatrical aspect ratio. So, in the full-screen DVD release, you’re actually seeing more of the picture (top and bottom) than you would in a “widescreen” DVD release, which would be artifically matted to give a widescreen look.

Same thing with Titanic: it was not filmed in widescreen, but shown theatrically with a widescreen matting. The home video release showed more of the image (hats and shoes, as one person put it) than the theatrical did.

OMG!
Chris Noonan finally shows his Kubickian streak!
I always thought Babe would be way funnier if the animals wore hats and shoes!!! Thank you Walloon! I’m gonna buy a copy right now!

That’s called Open Matte, and is really just a courtesy for the TV ratio, not truly what the cinematographer wants.
