She was my late mother’s younger sister, my mom passed 28 years ago. Both women had five kids, because that’s what you did if you were Catholic in the sixties. (Oddly, both of them converted TO Catholicism as did a third sister.)
It was very low key. They had cremated her before the service and no words were said. Just relatives who haven’t seen each other in a while offering condolences.
This was very sudden because she hadn’t been sick. It was just pneumonia that snuck up on her.

Surrendering in Afghanistan? Where’d you pull that from, your ass? Obama stepped up the war in Afghanistan and is planning to pull out much slower than the vast majority of the nation wants. Or is “surrendering” just another way of saying “serving as commander in chief as a Democrat”?

Um, actually Phonics was the way language was taught for centuries and it’s the way it SHOULD be taught. It is the way that it was taught in school when I grew up, and while I guess you can get all upset that I occassionally misspell a word or two when writing in a hurry, I usually know what I am reading.
Unlike the 20% who can’t read their diplomas.
Heck, let’s not even talk about the stats. This is an old problem, it was a problem when I was in the Army and I’d get these inner city kids who couldn’t compose a simple sentence, couldn’t do simple math, and didn’t know simple history, like what year World War I was fought. The sad thing was, most of these kids joined the army to get into college.

Only if they don’t know what mythology means and are disinclined to look it up and see that a mythology is a collection of sacred stories. Neither of which I doubt, but that doesn’t mean they were attacked. I see the claims of being attacked are themselves a kind of attack, or at leat an offensive strategy. I am sure once taken into the fold you get the playbook and this is candidly treated as a political gamemanship, to claim that anything non-Christian is anti-Christian.

yes, they did. And frankly, I don’t agree with that. But again, he’s the president, and as one of his predecessors said, “The Buck Stops Here”. Except with Obama, the Buck stopped with someone else, or it was in an earthquake in Japan, or maybe it was the guy who left three years ago’s fault.

In my world, schools should be about preparing kids for life. Sometimes that means molding the school to the kid instead of molding the kid to the school. This is why I think we need fairly massive privatization. We need to create menus that fit the customer- in this case the kids and their parents.
This is my biggest problem with Public Education. It seems to have a one size fits all mentality towards the subject, and tries to mold everyone into the shape they are supposed to be in.
If a kid acts outs, you need to drug him up with Ritalin.
The nuns at my catholic school had a great cure for Attention Deficit Disorder. It was called " wooden ruler across the knuckles". She had your undivided attention after that.
Now, was it a total success? Not really. I’m not a practicing Catholic today. But I had the discipline to complete college (not an easy thing to do when both of your parents come down with terminal illnesses when you are trying to study for Geology 102) and become an NCO in the United States Army.
In short, my life was not ruined because someone taught me what I now think is a fairy tale about Adam and Eve.
You seem to think that anyone should care why your life was or was not ruined. The whole world revolves around your own experiences, and needs to pay attention to your anecdotal notions of which principles are sound and good and moral, right? Remind me of why that is, again, like a good fellow?
Recovering Republican, do you have school aged kids? I ask because it may look to outsiders like the schools are handing out pediatric psych meds like they used to hand out candy, but doctors are the ones prescribing meds, with parental consent. Or at parental instigation. Not to say some schools don’t talk up the concept a lot, but the parents at least have to agree. Heaven knows the percent of kids on meds sounds way too high. My daughter has ADHD, and our schools did not push the idea of meds, but wanted to be informed. And we wanted to keep the teachers apprised of the situation with my daughter.
Both my kids are in special ed, so they each get an Individualized Education Plan, as required by Federal law. It’s great for the kids with serious special needs (at least in my distrct), but if every student had an IEP the school system would grind to a halt just from the required meetings. I agree teachers should be flexible to meet their students’ needs, and have tools to support that, but a cafeteria approach to elementary education is not simple or cheap.
The CBO says the stimulus worked.. It would have worked better if the Republicans hadn’t sabotaged it as much as they could.
As for the oil drilling in the Gulf, it would take years before any of it reached the market. Obama’s actions did diddly squat about oil prices. Face it, the world’s appetite for oil is growing faster than the ability to produce it. Face another fact, the US’s share of the worlds oil reserves is much less than its share of world oil usage.
What could Obama do that wouldn’t be surrendering in Afghanistan? Is anything short of saying “we’ll be there forever” a surrender, in your view?

You are aware that we had an enormous oil spill in the gulf, aren’t you. There was a moratorium on drilling until that was kind of cleaned up. It has been lifted. But allowing drilling does not result in oil the next day. It takes a few years to get on line.
Some stupid Dems think we should regulate the drilling and inspect the drilling platforms. I guess you would be against that too.

Obama has greatly upped the troops in Afghanistan, a war that has been going on for 10 years. I suppose Obama gets credit for the whole decade in your mind, even though he went bigger in Afghanistan against the wishes of most Democrats. It was what the Repubs wanted.
