Well, had a lovely time with lots of Dopers and non-Dopers at Green-Wood. My friends Terry and Michael were there, and Thea from work, who brought with her the Barbie Twins–two identical twins, six foot-something, looking like they were drawn by Tom of Finland. Quite a sight.
Oxymoron was there, and Grandfather Trout, Stuyguy (who rode his motorcycle), Billdo (with an attractive young lady in tow), Alto, Juniper (with an attractive young man AND a smart mouth in tow), Ukulele Ike (looking 25 pounds lighter and very dashing, in a rumpled professor kind of way) . . . Am I forgetting anyone? Manhattan and Biggirl blew us off.
I’m off to have dinner and will let others tell you about the graves–including the Hall/Mills murder victim who “had her t’roat cut from rear t’ rear.”
Oh please, Eve, it’d have taken a full set of Barbie Sextuplets to equal one Tom’s Man! (Not they they didn’t add to the day’s scenic enjoyments - my biggest problem was that Thea really didn’t bring enough twins to share.)
My favorite moment was when our guide gestured down the road, telling us to look at the grave “by that sphinx down there.”
Which, after some searching, turned out to be an obelisk.
Well, I did have one good moment–our guide said, “You’ve heard of Dunne and Bradstreet?” [motions to tomb] “Well, that’s Bradstreet.” Durng the pause that ensued, I said, “And now he’s Done.”
The saddest grave was that of silent-movie star Florence LaBadie who, as you can see, doesn’t even have a marker. She was a big star in the WWI era, and died at the age of 28 in a car accident.
Wonder how much it would cost to get a tombstone for the poor girl?
Man, I was biting my lip so hard I was afraid it was going to bleed! That guy’s a hoot and a half!
Keith and I made it back to PA in one piece, though I think Kurt Russell had an easier time getting off of Manhattan than we did; Traffic was all snarled from the AIDS walk earlier in the day. But all in all, it was a lovely day and I was pleased to share it with you.
Juniper,
off to peruse back issues of American Cemetery, thankyouverymuch.
I’m in the middle of moving and the plan was to get the truck Friday afternoon and move Friday and Saturday. Well, we didn’t get the truck until Saturday at 6pm. We were all up until 4 in the morning.
Was anyone able to open the photos of our tour I e’d them today? I have no idea what I’m doing, and the ones I sent myself at home aren’t viewable . . . I hate the 21st cebtuiry, it’s way too complicated.
