I guess it was to show why Strickland had a similar personality to his ancestor. He comes from a long line of pricks

If for no other reason, to determine that Doc not only survived, but built another Time Machine.
IIRC, the director’s commentary mentions that they originally had a bit where it was later mentioned that Mad Dog Tannen killed the Marshall, but that got cut out of the final movie.
Yep, Marshall Strickland was killed by Mad Dog Tannen. You’ll notice that at the end after the duel, a different Marshall arrives to arrest the Gang for robbing the Stage. That’s because Strickland is dead. It’s a shame they cut it out - effectively implying it never happened at all - because it would be much more satisfying for Strickland to arrest Tannen.
Anyway, historically all the men of the Strickland line (and it may only be two generations between the young Strickland boy and Principal Strickland in 1955/1985) are sticklers for discipline and dislike ‘slackers’.
