Background to MP "Bruce" sketch (and other Britcom you might need explained)

I don’t know that the “Bruce” sketch reflects anything but superficial knowledge of Australia, combined with a vague sense that Australians were/are uncouth, semi-literate, rural yahoos.

I mean, I have little doubt that the Pythons could have written an almost identical sketch (with different accents) about the Philosophy department at the University of Texas. Texans and Australians are very different places in a number of ways, but they have this in common: they’re widely (and wrongly) perceived as cowboys all over the world, despite the fact that their populations are largely urban.

Despite the stereotypical Texas image, you’d find that the faculty at the University of Texas is extremely liberal, for the most part. There are a LOT more Marxists than J.R. Ewings teaching at Texas’ leading colleges. I’d expect it’s the same in Australia.
