Do you have an Aldi where you live? That’s always a good place to check for cheap eggs. That’s where I see them as low as 69 cents a pound. I doubt you’ll find them much cheaper than at Aldi, so if they’re two bucks a dozen there, it probably is Washington.
Looking at their map, it looks like Aldi is kind of a Midwest thing. Or Midwest-to-South, with some in the East. Trader Joe’s and Aldi Nord are related.
Yes, but “Aldi” in the US is Aldi Süd. Different ownership and business than Aldi Nord. (They are related in the sense they were split off from the same business back in the 60s.)
Pulykamell and I are both in the Chicago area. Maybe we just have a surplus of cheap eggs here.
Really cheap all over Ohio. It’s a Midwest thing.
Of course, “69 cents a dozen” is meant there.
I live in CA. It’s a great place to live, but ain’t nuthin cheap here!
I think I remember reading once that young hens lay smaller eggs than older hens. I don’t know if it’s true but it makes sense to me.
I buy them at the farmers market when I can but I don’t have a problem with grocery store eggs. One place at the market is a larger producer and their eggs are usually the size of graded “large” eggs. They keep the jumbo sized ones in the back. Smaller vendors with (I assume) smaller flocks sometimes have eggs so big I pass on them because they’ll throw off my recipes. I love the color the farm eggs give to my vanilla frozen custard so I’ll only make it in the summer.
