Bacon... In... Spaaaaaceeee...!

I heard this on the radio this aft. Two guys from Seattle want to launch a kilo of bacon into near space via balloon. Link.

Bother! Could a mod please move this to MPSIMS? Thanks.

Done.

Ha! I knew it was bacon for aliens.

 And the launch is scheduled for … perhaps when pigs fly?

They purchased orange jumpsuits and are growing mustaches for safety reasons.

The real shock to me is that their bacon salt is not only vegan, it’s kosher too.

Using re-entry heat would possibly be the most expensive method to
make bacon. That would be the next logical step.

We’ve already done a thread on launching bacon into space. The concept is already owned by the Chicago Reader – they need to pay us royalties, preferably in the form of bacon.

No, the idea here isn’t to push the bacon away from Earth, but to push it in its raw state just high enough so that it is fried during re-entry. Think of it as part of
a balanced, intercontinental ballistic style breakfast. The tricky bit is in routing just enough of the re-entry energy to the bacon.

Perhaps the heat shields of space craft can be made of bacon. The fat boils off and cools the ship during re-entry, the whole continent shares the smell of nice frying bacon, and you can eat part of the ship after landing.

Wait, where’s that thread about the DARPA funding thing. I think this is the solution. Funding a hundred year space exploration mission with Space Bacon.

I think it’s enough incentive to offer the space travelers as much free bacon as they can carry. The taste of bacon fried under the light of a distant star has GOT to be the ultimate reward.
