Bad Movies We Love

Four. Bruce Willis and Danny Aiello singing “Swinging on a Star” is an all time classic scene. You just can’t go wrong.

“Bunnie! Ball ball.”

“Please Keep your eyes above the line.”

Speaking of Rogers & Hammerstein’s “Cinderella”: Have any of you seen the remake with “Brandy” and Whitney Houston? My 5-year-old daughter loves it and I’ve endured it many times. The reason it’s basically a bad movie is that it’s got way too many songs and it’s too, too, long. (Both versions.)

In this remake, Whitney adds another song at the end that’s pure torture to watch. She produced the movie and it’s an ego trip for her. She plays the fairy godmother. The whole thing is a multi-ethnic extravaganza. Whoopie Goldberg plays the prince’s mother and she actually sings a few lines.

Speaking of actors painfully singing, remember Marlon Brando singing in “Guys and Dolls?” Yipes.

For Hudson Hawk make it 5.

I’ve always loved Logan’s Run even though it was kind of bad.

For some reason I’ve always liked Tremors. Giant worms attacking!

Spaced Invaders – the earth is invaded by 5 incompetent Martians.

Paint Your Wagon – Clint Eastwood and Lee Marvin singing. What were they thinking?

Okay . . .

I can second the votes for Overboard, Dirty Dancing, Tremors (God, so funny), and Paint Your Wagon. All were great and I would watch them again.

More confessions:

Hard Target, with Jean-Claude Van Damme. When you watch him slide his coat back from his hip right before kicking someone in the head, just like the cowboys do in Westerns right before they draw their guns, that is some classic cheese.

Starship Troopers, which is gaining cult status, but it is still hard to admit that you like it.

Strictly Ballroom, another movie (Aussie import) that was “bad” on purpose, but I just love it!!!

My big guilty pleasure is Red Dawn. You know, the one where the Commies invade Colorado. Of course, the Red Army is no match for Patrick Swayze and Charlie Sheen.

Sure, it’s right-wing paranoid propaganda! Sure the premise is utterly goofy! But damn it’s fun to watch a bunch of high school kids fightin’ off the Russkies!

Viva los Biodome!

Hairspray and Crybaby

Red Dawn: Good call!

And in the same vein, how about Death Before Dishonor with Brian Keith and the guy that played Hunter(?) on TV. U.S. Marines kick ass in Lebanon. Even a right-winger like me could see the propaganda machine rolling along in this one.

Army of Darkness is (loosely) part of the Evil Dead series. Thus, it automatically receives “good” movie status.

I will watch Ghostbusters and Beetlejuice everytime they are on. I don’t know, I’m just not tired of them yet. I mean, how many time can you see a movie in ten years?
Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, Teen Wolf, The Breakfast Club, St. Elmo’s Fire, Dirty Dancing, and Red Dawn, Big…I love these movies too.
But for the first time ever, I will reveal my deepest, darkest guilty pleasure.
** Revenge of the Nerds**
Oh, but it gets worse. I like ALL of them. There are 4. I know I know, I don’t think it can be worse. The movies make me laugh, and laugh, and laugh

Ah! The Goonies! I remember that movie. It’s a nostalgia trip for a lot of people who are around 25 years old. I’ve found that a surprisingly large amount of people that age secretly liked it. I have to see Joe vs The Volcano again, too. Red Dawn sounds hilarious.

One of my personal favorites is Killer Klowns From Outer Space. I mean, the balloon animal bloodhounds, the human dummy, the evil popcorn, and of course the shadow puppet… that is one of the best works of art the human race has produced. Plus, it has a nifty title song by the Dickies.

Another recent candidate is Anaconda. Yeah, yeah, I know- but come on, didn’t you spot the backwards waterfall? That was awesome. And it was quite a surprise at the end when the heroes discovered that lighting a snake on fire only makes it even more dangerous. I loved that part.

On the MST3K front, I really liked Puma Man, Overdrawn At The Memory Bank, and Manos: The Hands of Fate.

I would have to cast my votes for Escape from L.A. and Surf Ninjas. Every time that one comes on TBS, I just have to sit down and watch… and I don’t know why!

I have to add another Jean-Claude Van Damme movie Universal Soldier. I admit it. I watch the whole thing purely to see his naked backside. Wowsa!

I second Strictly Ballroom!

Screw the “no deliberately bad movies” rule!
I vote for Attack of the Killer Tomatoes!!

Chrisbar

how bout escape from new york?

I second Universal Soldier.

And I’m just dying that I did not come up with Killer Clowns. Oh, the schlock. That movie is a rite of passage.

I can’t believe I’m the first person to mention Better Off Dead. John Cusack plays a lovesick teenage skier dude with a weird family. I actually found a copy at Target for $6.99 not too long ago, to the disgust of my SO. We’ve only watched it 3 or 4 times since then…

  1. I bought the DVD.

I’ve gone so far as to write a Logan’s Run FAQ, at http://www.netcom.com/~rogermw/LogansRun.html.
P.S. I also wrote humorous lyrics to the main theme music from Raiders of the Lost Ark once, Mr. Jones.

P.P.S. There is now a remake of Logan’s Run officially in pre-production at Warner Bros…
P.P.P.S. And Joe vs. the Volcano makes my heart swell every time I see it. sigh

I second “Better Off Dead”…TWO DOLLARS! YOU OWE ME TWO DOLLARS!
I also have to say “UHF”…it’s dumb but hilarious nonetheless.

I’d have to say that “Under the Cherry Moon” was the worst tripe I ever saw. Still, I’m a Prince fan, and if it’s on, I’ll watch some of it just to see a man who can wear tighter pants than Tom Jones. With high heels, yet.

Maybe this is admitting too much, but I also liked Exit to Eden. blushes in shame
