Coneheads- Lousy movie, but the soundtrack featured such gems as “Soul to Squeeze” (Red Hot Chili Peppers), “Free World, Baby” (R.E.M.), “Tainted Love” (Soft Cell), “Kodachrome” (Paul Simon), etc., etc.
I nominate “Tommy”. An absolutely craptacular adaptation of a classic album, but it does feature Elton John, Tina Turner, Eric Clapton, and The Who.
I should also mention Wim Wenders’s “Until The End of the World”, an unbelievably lame movie, but with a soundtrack that features Lou reed, Talking Heads, R.E.M., Elvis, Costello, Nick Cave, Jane Siberry with k.d. lang, U2, and Peter Gabriel.
There was another movie that I can’t remember the name of; part cartoon, part live action, IIRC Kim Basinger was in it. It was horrible but had an awesome soundtrack with The Ministry, My Life with the Thrill Kill Cult, and others.
That would be “Cool World”, which was the only movie I ever really considered going to the window and asking for my money back. How many pounds of drugs did Ralph Bakshi take to get that one done?!
As for lousy movies with great soundtracks… “Taboo” with Kay Parker. Man, some great funk on that one - huh? oh, you mean movies the whole family can watch? Nevermind… :o
Dumb and Dumber. God that movie licked ass. Haven’t seen another one that bad until Something About Mary. But Dumb and Dumber’s soundtrack was good - Crash Test Dummies, Deadeye Dick, and other goodies.
