"Bad Sex" column on Nerve. Help me figure out who he's talking about.

Oh, and even though its not on the clip…Dave DID come up to the stage and talk to Exene and the rest of the band for a good minute or two.

It’s entirely possible, but I have to point out (hopefully without using the word “also,” as I seem to have used all mine up somewhere) that punks in the 80s knew what a freakin’ hippie was. For Chrissakes, Jerry Garcia was still alive beck then, and second-generation deadheads were breeding in the backwaters of American culture (now you can spray for them without endangering the pets). There weren’t “alternative” radio stations then, everything was AOR Prog Rock, and they played plenty of late 60s music. IN the late 70s, you’d still hear you would hear Jimi Hendrix, Cream and old Allman Brothers more often than Elvis Costello or The Pretenders. Anything harder than that never saw trhe airwaves.

Assuming Tabb wasn’t trying to show Nerve’s readers how cool he was, he wouldn’t use “hippie” unless he meant hippie.

I agree. Suzanna’s pussy would be sweet and fresh even if she didn’t bath for an entire tour.

Hey, what about Belinda Carlisle? No, I don’t think she was married either.

THAT’S George Tabb? I always pictured someone much younger. But then if he’s screwing people in the 80’s, I guess not that young. I would hope.

Dave’s interview with them is on the clip, actually, but Tabb’s article says specifically that SHE got to sit on Dave’s couch, and the description sounds like someone who was one of the main two guests, not a musical guest who gets invited over (though that could certainly be the case). Nobody in that X clip went over to Dave’s desk.

Courtney Love? Does the age work out? It seems she would be pretty young inthe early 80s, but I’m too lazy to Wiki everything right now. Would she be in any bands considered “hippie?” Certainly not any of the riot grrrrl stuff she did in the early years (wouldn’t that be mid-late 80s?)

Also I downgrade Aimee Mann to “probably not.” She’s a natural blonde, therefore the carpet would match the drapes.

Belinda Carlisle is an intriguing guess, but I think The Go-Gos were pretty much considered punk (and pretty famous) as early as 1980 or so. If this happened in the early 80s I have trouble with anyone calling them “hippie,” (pop, if anything), and they would be too big to play shitty punk dives (which I am kind of assuming this was).

Oddly enough, I am coming back to Madonna (nooooo!). After she arrived in NYC she briefly played drums in a band (I forget the name, maybe The Breakfast Club?) and I think at some point she may have sang lead for them. But she certainly wasn’t married, and I have doubts that the band would have toured. And I’m not sure how “hippie” they were. Yeah, OK. There’s no possible way it could be Madonna! :wally

I’m having trouble thinking of any good ones on my own though. Hey, are we all assuming she’s American? What are some across-the-pond possibilities?
