Baffling for me; perhaps easy for you.
So here I am working on a Windows 2000 Professional OS. When I want to create a new document, I right click on the mouse, go under “new” and then “new Word document.”
The document icon appears on the desktop. I type in the document name: “fundraiser.”
A screen warning then says:
“Rename! If you change a filename extension, the file may be unusable. Are you sure you want to change it?”
Okay, so later, I try to open another such file and the screen warning says this time:
"Opening: fundraiser.dat
Caution: You are attempting to open a filed of type ‘.dat’ (.dat). These files are used by the operating system and by various programs in editing or modifying. Opening them could damage your system."
---------> What’s going on here? I’m just trying to create a new document. Can you clue me in to the 21st century?
(Yes, I am able to open these files by specifying Word 2000, but I know I’m doing something wrong.) Help!
When you right click and pick New -> Word Document, the icon on the desk says “New Microsoft Word Document.Doc”. You can name the file fundraiser, but you have to keep the .doc extension. If you do that then you have no problem. When you do the right click thing from the desk top, you are creating and saving the blank doc which requires the .doc extension. When you create a new file in Word the extension is added behind the scenes when you save.
IAAMCP, though my typical platform is *nix.
It seems to me that you’ve got your folder set to display extensions so that when you type over the default name you’re also typing over the extension. Try doing this: In your folder, do Tools -> Folder Options -> View. Click ‘Hide file extensions for known file types’. Then you should be able to rename the file while Win2kPro keeps the extension static.
My guess is that if you don’t specify an extension your BillBox gives the file the default extension .dat and this is the cause of error #2.
YMMV.

I got here hoping I could add something, but alas you guys covered all of it. I just also like to say that that isn’t specificly a win/2000 problem, I’ve had it happen on 98.
