Baggage Check In Question ?

Is it true that it is not required to XRAY baggage that is checked in at the airline counter???

I flew today. I flew with 7 hard cases filled with electronics, including batteries, two soft bags and a Magliner hand truck. To the best of my knowledge, nothing was X-Rayed. It might be when out of my sight, but the few times I’ve had my gear X-Rayed due to increased security, it happened AT the ticketing counter, and the materials went through a floor-level enclosed portable X_Ray machine made for large items.

That was after the 1993 WTC Bombing. I cannot fathom why they are not being used now, or at least not being used today at Newark Airport which is where I flew out of.

It’s unclear to me whether or not they have to do such an X ray proceedure in front of the owner of the bags. In any case, my cases are now padlocked shut with large locks. One would have to A) Come and get me, and have them unlocked, or B) Force the case open, splitting it apart irreparably ( sp??).

Sorry to give a half-answer, but it is what I went through today. YMMV.
