I think you’re confusing “interpretation” with “assumption.” Folks assumed the board performance would be enhanced due to subscriptions, when that was never stated.
As has been noted multiple times, various in-charge type personages here have said the Reader financed this board at a loss for years. Now that there is actually a little money flowing from the board back to the Reader, I can understand them wanting to use that money to stop the bleeding before they gild the lily.
On the flip side, though, the same veiled threats that pop up every time somebody has a question regarding board performance (“We’re lucky to have the board at all; the Reader could pull the plug any day”) are well and truly getting old. If the Reader makes the decision that this board is too expensive to run, so be it. Don’t keep harping on it.
Agreed, Sauron. If the rationale for paying subscriptions, is, as has been said so repeatedly, to ensure the continued existence of the SDMB (as well it should), either such veiled threats are meaningless, or the rationale is.
