It was not a shortening of “Ronald,” nor (as Ronny would tell you), was it ever spelled “Ronnie.” No, it was “Ronny,” given to him at birth, and appearing as such on his birth certificate. I remember the time that Ron (that was OK with him) got pulled over for speeding, and got a ticket. What pissed him off the most was that the police officer kept calling him “Ronald.” As he said to me at the time, “‘Ronald’ is not my name!” Thankfully, he had the presence of mind to be polite and just deal with the officer.
