  4. Garret Hobart
  5. Edmund Ross

He voted for acquittal in the impeachment of Andrew Johnson and so saved his presidency. He was a senator from Kansas, and JFK included him in the book Profiles in Courage.

  6. George H.W. Bush

He was my commander-in-chief and not a bad president overall. Certainly the best Republican Prez in my lifetime (not a real high bar).

  7. Tom McCall

Governor of Oregon in the 1970s. Famously told people to come visit, but don’t stay. Passed two landmark bills: the “bottle bill”, which mandated refunds on all empty drink bottles; the “open beaches” bill, which made every inch of beach in Oregon public land. He also pushed for decriminalization of marijuana and curbing metropolitan sprawl.

I like guys who get captured.

Seriously, he was a POW for 5 1/2 years, endured torture, and refused to participate in North Vietnamese propaganda until he reached his breaking point. For Trump to dismiss his dedication so callously is the ultimate betrayal McCain didn’t deserve.

Arguably the progenitor of the modern conservative movement. Back when I was young and hopeful about the future, I used to carry a pocket-sized edition of The Conscience of a Conservative. These days that book seems more Libertarian than Republican. That was before populists (some of whom have no conscience) and big-government solutions hijacked the Republican party.
