Henry Flagler, the owner of this railroad, was responsible for the vision and eventual construction of the Key West Extension, otherwise known as the Over-Sea Railroad. Parts of the railroad were damaged by a hurricane in 1935 and never rebuilt; however, when US Highway 1 was extended to Key West they utilized his original route.
