The perpetrator of what was, at that time, the largest mass shooting incident by a single person in America. Whitman, a 25-year-old Marine veteran, gained access to the tower of the Main Building on the University of Texas campus on August 1, 1966. From this vantage point, the sniper killed fifteen people and injured 31 others over the space of about an hour and a half (he was also responsible for the deaths of his wife and mother before beginning his shooting spree) before two members of the Dallas police were able to neutralize him.
