Thirteen Ways a Batter Can Reach First Base (without getting a base hit) (there are a total of twenty-three ways, or so I’ve been told)
Hit by pitch
Dropped third strike followed by a successful run to first
Intentional walk
Fielder’s choice
e.g. Runner already on first. The shortstop chases down a dribbler into shallow left field, then decides his best play is to force out the runner at second vs firing a throw to first base to get the batter out. This is a fielder’s choice, not a base hit for the batter on first.

Batted ball hits a baserunner
If a batted ball hits a baserunner, the ball is immediately dead, the runner is out, and the batter is awarded first base, unless that was the third out of the inning. All other runners return to the bases they occupied before the pitch, unless the batter being placed on first forces the runner to advance a base.
For example: runners on first and second and less than two out. Batter hits a ground ball between second and third which hits the runner who was on second. That runner is out. The runner who was on first advances to second, and the batter goes to first.

Umpire interference
When a fair ball hits an umpire before it passes a fielder. It becomes a dead ball and the batter is awarded first but it is not scored as a hit.
That’s just another way of saying intentional walk. For Mets fans it’s an abracadabra walk. That said, I can’t think there could be 23 ways without using different words for the same thing.
I agree with this statement. I would like to see a definitive list of the 23 different ways. Besides, it’s the manager who tells the ump that the batter should be placed on first base via the intentional walk.
So if the batter is injured via a hit by pitch and can’t make it to first (which has happened), I think that he’s no longer a batter. That, I suppose, is a matter of semantics.
Here’s the article I found that listed the 23 ways. And oh by the way, the 23rd method was via a hit.

A game is suspended, a runner is traded, and a new player is substituted to take the place of the batter.
