Perhaps I’m an outlier, but I’ve never had cabbage and black-eyed peas on New Year’s Eve. Likewise with tamales on Christmas Eve.

I grew up having cabbage, black-eyed peas, and ham on New Year’s Day. This was for good luck in the coming year. I never got a good sense of how widespread the tradition was, though. When I met my wife-to-be, she had never heard of it but liked the idea and continued it.
