The audience stood up and cheered. It wasn’t until I saw the film later on TV that I ever heard the dialogue in the early part of that scene.

When I consider that scene, along with the scene in The Return of the Jedi where one of Jabba’s droids is being tortured by having hot metal plates applied to its ‘feet’, it means that some varieties of droids were intentionally programmed to feel pain – which sorta weirds me out.
