In 2010, the SCOTUS held 5–4 that the free speech clause of the First Amendment prohibits the government from restricting independent expenditures for political campaigns by corporations, including nonprofit corporations, labor unions, and other associations. This opened the floodgates for big money to openly convert American elections from “may the best man win” to “may the person with the most money to spend win”, and for special interests and their lobbyists to exert even more influence in politics on all levels.
