  10. Prohibition begins in January 1920.

Even though the 18th Amendment was ratified in January 1919, as it was written the banning of the sale, manufacture, or transport of liquor wouldn’t take effect until a year after ratification, so as of 17 January 1920, the US was officially and nominally ‘dry’. It would remain so until 1933, with the ratification of the 21st Amendment (this amendment took effect immediately upon ratification).

Since I missed my chance earlier:

Your favorite movie that was made before you were born

  1. Gentleman’s Agreement (1947)

Your favorite movie that was made before you were born

  1. Gentleman’s Agreement (1947)
  2. The Wages of Fear (1953)

I probably would have had a different answer yesterday and a yet different one tomorrow, but today, this is it.

Your favorite movie that was made before you were born

  1. Gentleman’s Agreement (1947)
  2. The Wages of Fear (1953)
  3. The Crimson Pirate (1952)

With The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938) a close second

… and a suggestion … ‘before you were born’ is going to be different for each of us. In my case, that was 1954, so there’s a metric ton of good movies from the late '50s - early '60s that are out there but AFTER my birth. Perhaps contributors could put the year of their birth someplace in their reply?
