Bakin' a birfday cake!!

So, you see, it’s Satellite^Gal’s birthday today. She wanted a cake from the local Cakery Cafe. there’s the rub; I went over there yesterday around 5pm. Problem is, they close at 4:30. They’re also closed on Sundays.

So, I’m baking a cake.

I’ve never baked a cake before, so I’m going to try and keep it as simple as possible, while still trying to add my own special little flair to it. So this is the plan of attack:

two layer Betty Crocker Milk Chocolate cake mix.
on top of first layer: Dream Whip, crushed up Skor bar, and sliced strawberries. Then second layer.
frosted with BC whipped frosting, then after I write the message, sprinkle with more Skor bar.
apply candles.

So, does this sound good? Any sins, or just sinful? What minor tweaks would you do to it? Keep in mind I’d be limited to what I have in the house, as well as the 3.5 hours left before she gets home from work.

Sounds fantastic! She’s a lucky lady. You can go nuts if you want to by colouring the frosting with food colouring, or decorating with candies (m&m’s, that type of thing), or spread some jam between the layers in addition to frosting - whatever you’re into. Just remember to trim the top of the bottom layer so that the top sits nicely, and don’t misspell anything (like I did once.)

Oh- also - make sure the cakes are cool before you frost them, otherwise frosting them is a real pain

Have fun!

Sounds good to me. I didn’t know they still made Dream Whip.

Yep… although all I could find was the powder stuff, that you add milk and vanilla…

Cake’s in the oven, Dream Whip is whipped, strawberries are sliced. Waiting for cake to come out and cool.

cakes are out of pans and cooling… was worrying a bit when they wouldn’t drop out of the pans, but with a bit of butterknife finesse, I got them out.
Another 20 minutes, and I should be able to assemble my masterpiece. :stuck_out_tongue:

Was there any other kind? Mmmmm… My local grocery store went through a period a few years ago of purging a lot of products. Dream Whip must have been one of them.

Did you grease and flour the pans? (Put some flour in a greased pan and shake it around until the whole pan has a light, even coating of flour.) If you didn’t, do that next time. That keeps the cake from sticking.

It’s official… fugliest cake ever… :sob: rofl

It would’ve worked out better, if the Dream Whip and strawberries didn’t squeeze out from between the layers, making it impossible to frost the sides of the cake…
Add to that the fact that the writing is hideous…

I hope it tastes good…

S^G walks away, shaking his head in disappointment in himself…

Don’t feel bad. Even the professionals have trouble sometimes. Here, this blog should cheer you up.

Look on the sidebar at the “Fan Favorites” :).

Next time, run a bead of butter cream frosting around the top edge of the bottom layer. It acts like a dam and holds the soft fillings in place.

I’m sure it still tasted good right? It was cake, how could it have been bad?

I came back to report on the cake; it’s not too bad at all…

I’m somewhat undecided on the combination of strawberries and Skor bar, but it wasn’t altogether unpleasant. Having been on the kitchen counter all afternoon/evening, the Dream Whip and Skor bar were a little warm, so I made room in the fridge, and all should be better…

That’s definitely something to keep in mind for next time… thanks…
