I’ve always assumed it was a euphemism for “bullshit” because it sounds a little like it. I’ll be interested to find out if it is.
Aside, this is one of those words that needs to vanish into obscurity. Like fisticuffs and codswallop and similar words that only James Randi and Wilford Brimley use.
I always use it as a synonym for b/s. Basically, it equates to “Rubbish, my dear fellow!” with a “har-RUMPH”-ing sound. 
It’s the same as “bushwa,” “hogwash,” “eyewash,” “bilgewater,” “nonsense” and “bullshit.”
