Baldur's Gate 3! {finally Released August 3rd, 2023}

Yep, I’m definitely planning on picking them up.

Also planning on slurping down parasites like nobody’s business.

I’ve just been playing for a long while. I was exploring, clearing areas on the map, finishing off minor quests, etc. All of a sudden the game crashed to desktop. Okay, so I go to restart the game–I am in the habit of quicksaving like crazy, so I figured this was no big deal.

When I went into Steam, Steam downloaded something.I don’t know, maybe a patch. It was automatic, and I did not initiate the download. When I started the game and clicked “Continue,” I realized I was in a part of my gameplay from yesterday. When I go to my save list, all of my saves from today are greyed out and unavailable: they are labeled “Incompatible version.”

This game is pissing me off big time.

Hitfix 4 released a couple hours ago, then got rolled back temporarily due to a problem. Any saves made after hotfix 4 won’t work until they fix the hotfix and re-release it.

PCGamer gave BG3 a review score of 97, first game with a score higher than 96 in 13 years

Thank you for that info. I have my fingers crossed that when the fixed hotfix is reinstalled, I will be able to play my most recent saves. I’ll wait and see, I am not going to take Larian Studio’s word for that, I will only believe it if I see it.

This is a very good game (my most recent issue notwithstanding), and it is getting easier now that I am level five.

I think I have spell paralysis. There are so many spells, and no matter which ones I prepare, I feel like I am missing out, and should’ve prepared others.

I guess this hotfix issue is telling me to turn off the game and go play outside.

Jesus fuck, I played for like two hours before dinner.

That’s incredibly annoying.

I’m reading the Steam Community Message Board about this issue. I suppose I’m somewhat glad to hear that it’s not just me, many many people have lost several hours of saves. The only reason I’m glad is that at least there is pressure on Larian to fix this!

I hear ya! I’m thankful that I only lost about 30 minutes. They did include a particularly annoying fight (no magic allowed, and I have a cleric, a bard, and eldritch knight, and a wizard…) and leveling 4 of my characters to 6 (hooray, Arcane Mysteries! Now my bard has some legit dangerous spells. Haste (ok, that one is still a buff… but a really good one!) and Call Lightning). But I just bit the bullet and redid them.

I am sure Larian will be quick to fix this though - 4 hotfixes since release is great! They’re doing a good job with maintaining the game so far, especially compared to some studios I could mention… cough cough Total War.

Annoyed by Act II quest-related ending

Act II Spoilers Ahoy

I killed Thorm before completing the Lift the Shadowcurse quest. Then I went back and finished it and the quest acts like you haven’t killed Thorm yet, making references to him and how he needs to die. After finding Oliver and reuniting him with Thaniel, Halsin says the curse will be lifted before I leave but it’s not. Online guides say that I have to talk to Thaniel in camp and he and Halsin will tell me the curse can’t be lifted until Thorm is dead. So I’m pretty sure I broke the quest by killing Thorm first despite no warning that this would be an issue. This is the second time in Act II that doing stuff out of order broke a quest without really warning you about it or even giving a good reason for it. Thaniel is reunited, Thorm is dead, make with the sunlight.

Edit: Ok, despite Thaniel not making it to camp, it said the curse lifted as I left Act II. This was AFTER the narrator was all “Well, looks like the curse is just gonna stay because you’re leaving now!” whenI hit the fast travel sigil right before the border.

I’m just finishing Act I. I always get stuck making new characters and restarting RPGs in a Rain Manesque cycle. My go to party members are Gale, Shadowheart and Lae’zel with me as a thief/ranger. Do other people change members? I figure I can use others when I replay the game.

Ive been sticking with Karlach, Gale, and Shadowheart. In a future run I’ll use different characters, respeccing as needed to make them into classes I find enjoyable.

I run with Shadowheart, Wyll/Gale and Karlach/Lae’zel

Wyll was respec’d into Warlock 2/Storm Sorcerer 7 so he can largely fill Gale’s role. I flip the caster/melee slots based on current quest plot and whim. I’m filling the Traps/Picks role in the party as well as “Party Face” with prof in Persuasion and expertise in Deception.

I lean more towards using Wyll/Karlach for their stories since my next run will be evil and I don’t think they’ll hang around for that. Lae’zel and Gale strike me as more pragmatic.

Larian has still not fixed their hotfix issue which bricked all game saves made while hotfix4 was active. There is also no ETA for when we can expect this to be fixed.

I’m rational and calm, and I understand that humans make mistakes. This happens. But I find that the way Larian handled this (by rolling back a patch that caused more trouble than it fixed) and lack of communication to be unacceptable.

Has anyone else been inconvenienced by this issue?

I do kinda wish they’d left Hotfix 4 as an opt in beta option or something, because they took it down to address crashing but only some PC builds had that issue.

Like I said I only lost about 30 minutes so I just redid that part of the game, so it was not a big deal for me.

I think they were smart to roll back ASAP but my undertsanding is that if your game was running already you could have played multiple hours after the patch was offline before you’d actually be reverted to hotfix 3.

That’s not quite true - the ETA is “before EOD Europe time”, but emphasis on the E in ETA -

I think that’s right around now, so I’d expect we either get the hofix very soon, or tomorrow their time.

Issue is now fixed, Hotfix 4 is back up.

There’s also a Steam post explaining what happened, apologizing, and letting us know what internal procedural changes they made to avoid this happening again.

Larian is a real class act.

Wow.

Not just an apology, but an explanation of exactly where and how they fucked up.

Ain’t something you see every day.

No wonder other developers are griping that Larian keeps making them look bad.

I hope they make oodles and oodles of money (even more than they already have), make some non-exploitative expansion packs to rake it in even more, and inspire some new business practices in the gaming industry. It’s a real breath of fresh air (and like poking your head out of a submarine for the first time in months, can make you realize just how nauseating the air you were previously breathing is).

A lot of the reviews on Steam are variations of “Wait a minute, a game with no cosmetic DLC cash grabs, no live service, a one-time cost, and a shitload of content? What’s happening and what year is it?”

On more in-game related topics, I found a weapon that’s extremely cool, but I’m not sure I have anyone who can leverage it.

It’s a pike that’s invisible, meaning you have advantage when using it since the bad guys cannot dodge well.

Pretty cool weapon, and it could make up for the -5 To Hit from Great Weapon Master.

But I don’t have anyone who can use it!

Lae’Zel I just switched over to greatswords because I found a very special greatsword that fits her very well.

Karlach gets advantage from Reckless Attack anyways, and I love her returning pike too much to switch away (she does have a greataxe in her pocket for up close and personal battles but honestly I haven’t needed it yet).

Wyll also uses pikes and he’s probably my strongest candidate. He currently has a pike that lets him make a bonus action attack every round, which is great because I don’t have anything better for him to do with his bonus action. He WOULD benefit from permenant advantage, though.

That just leaves Gale, Shadowheart, Astarion, and my bard - none of whom are going to use a pike.

I do need to find an alternative way to give Lae’Zel advantage reliably, so she can use GWM more often. And then if I can find a different Bonus Action usage for Wyll he can get the invisible pike. Hmmmm…
