Baldur's Gate 3! {finally Released August 3rd, 2023}

More inventory stuff:

A search bar in the camp chest.
The ability to search by tags like heat, arcane acuity, finesse, armor type, etc.
The ability to filter by proficiency based on the active character.
Get rid of bartering, it feels vestigial, especially since there’s only one merchant in the game (so far as I know) who’s in all three acts.

Respecs:

The ability to respec at any time is awesome, but since you CAN, you shouldn’t have to go back to 1 every time. You should have the option to pull up a level-by-level matrix and make changes within your build (ie, change my level 8 feat without having to rebuild my whole character).

These are all great.

Two more:

  • The camp chest should be resizeable by width in addition to height.
  • I want a camp library where I can keep all the notes, letters, books, and Githyanki CD-ROMs that I find.

I ended the game with a number of items that seemed potentially plot-related later on. They were not. Would’ve been nice to just have that shit tagged as wares, I agree. Then you can keep the option to untag them if you’re one of those players who likes to collect every teacup in the game or whatever.

Yeah the Proficiency thing is annoying. One time all my spells became unavailable and I couldn’t figure out why. It turned out I had put on boots I wasn’t proficienct in.

What makes it worse is there seems to be a display bug where it will say you aren’t proficient in somewhen you first equip it when you are so you (or at least I) have to double check every time I equip something new

I did use a bunch of trash to plug the vents leading down to the hag, made the going much easier.

One man’s trash is another Karlach’s improvised throwing weapon deadling 1d4+17257 damage three times per round

I was a little amused to see that Solasta is 65% off now on Steam.

“Hey, you kids like 5e D&D games?..”

Interesting shovel related trivia

According to the Steam achievements, more people have completed the game than have summoned Shovel. I don’t remember it being hard to find; I just stumbled across it somewhere.

I agree with most of the inventory improvements (although I feel like some of it is self-inflicted since I am such a packrat).

Two non-inventory complaints:

  1. I don’t like how it automatically figures out an ‘optimal’ move / jump combo for you. In combat I can end up running out of movement or getting an AoO when I didn’t expect it. Usually this happens when I have to pan to see the destination, but can’t see the character.
  2. I feel like I have to mess with the camera too much. This isn’t unique to this game; maybe it is the nature of the genre.

It was available on Game Pass so I got it a while back. It’s very enjoyable and different enough from BG3 that they can be enjoyed without overshadowing each other.

Solasta doesn’t have the polish or story or most of the stuff that makes BG3 great. It’s just not as good overall. But what it has that makes it stand out to me is that you can custom-make an entire party with their own backgrounds, stories, and personalities. They will interact with each other and get involved in NPC conversations as a group, contributing their own comments based on how you made them.

Imagine you can make your own version of the companions you encounter in BG3 using the same character creation process as you do the main character, all the way down to backgrounds. And then you’ll get the idea.

Again, it’s not nearly as good as BG3. But I still think it’s worth playing because it’s a very similar game but with its own spin that gives a different experience.

I think you could have used the masks…I just ran through.

Camera chicanery is definitely my biggest complaint as it was in Elden Ring…or as Carbot Animations called it, “Your greatest enemy, the camera operator”

Also “Get out of the fucking doorway so I have a shot…but thats on me”

Yeah, I played it when it first went on Game Pass. I enjoyed it enough to wish list it on Steam (hence the sale alert) though obviously it’s not to the same polish as BG3. It does match 5e more closely and does vertical movement better with actual flight and Spider Climb. For $11 on sale, it has enough to offer to justify the price provided you’re not expecting a BG3 experience.

You all save scum at all? I try to avoid it but have twice during the act 1 hag quest.

Didnt particularly want to kill an unarmed pregnant woman who went hostile or leave her unconscious body in a swamp

In Elden Ring it could be even more frustrating because the battles are real-time: “Why am I looking at the cave wall while I’m getting murdered?”, but the mouse made it less painful.

In BG3 we’re working 6 keys, a mouse wheel, and the ‘O’ button to get an OK view to execute an action at which point battle switches to the next character. Or to try to jump on a ledge that apparently does not have enough space or is too far. I’m not really complaining though. It is hard to get all million things perfect and I am having a blast anyway.

My kid told me to stop picking up 1 gp items and that alleviated many of my inventory frustrations. How much rope do you really need?

I can stop any time I want…

I’ve picking up rope, but never using it. Is there a way to use it?

No, it’s just vendor trash like rags and cups

In general I try to roleplay and stick with my decisions, but I did try a couple of options for Myrna and ended up back at my first choice.

I compulsively save as much as @Dr.Strangelove though. I hate redoing dialog, battles, walking, etc. in case the game crashes or I make a choice I really regret.

I did actually redo a couple of hours after trying a tadpole. I did it on a whim and then decided it wasn’t really in character (whatever that means for a video game).

I saw a claim that it could be used for some well, but not sure if it was EA noise.

When I first started playing I was carrying around 100 pounds of bottles and equipment because I thought I would need it to brew potions. I was also rationing my touch and arrows. The most exciting part of a game for me is the beginning when you don’t know what the limits and rules are. “I wonder what I use this chisel set for!?” Apparently earning 1 gp.
