Baltimore Dopers - Tell me about your town.

Ooooh. Covert messages from Jonathan Chance. This move is becoming more intriguing every day.

That’s like the fourth time this week someone has said something like that to me.

I feel like a spy or something. I’m ‘Fraught with meaning’.

But I mean it about the 28th of June.

I don’t know anything about Catonsville, except that Dimitri’s has the best crab dip on the planet.

Nope, beer is not sold in the supermarket; however, I am from Pennsylvania, where not only is beer not sold in the supermarket, it must be segregated completely from liquor and wine. So being able to buy both Kahlua and a six-pack under the same roof makes Baltimore seem like some sort of bohemian paradise to me.
You can find your Newcastles at Welles in Towson (Towson is a really nice college town north of the city; worth checking out) or at The Wine Source in Hampden. I’ve also found them in a convenience store called Supermart that is right around the corner from Paloma’s. Actually, you can find just about anything you want within walking distance of Paloma’s- transvestite hookers, Unitarian services, art collections going back thousands of years at the Walters Gallery, cheap produce and deli products at Lexington Market. Paloma’s is in the fine Mt. Vernon neighborhood mentioned above.

Max’s in Fells Point would have Newcastle on tap. For God’s sake, Max’s has lambic on tap.

Thank goodness. I was starting to get worried! I know this is going to make me sound like all I do is drink, but do liquor stores have regular hours there? I’ll be coming from the land of blue laws, where all liquor stores have to close when the sun goes down. (Really. In the summer, they close around 7, and in the winter they close at 6.)

My biggest concern is trying to find a job there. I mean, I’m sure I can find a job, but I don’t know if the pharmacy laws there are much different from here. I’m sure I can get a job waiting tables if I had to.

You know, Skerribaby, you have to just learn to trust the MADs. JC says June 28, you keep it open and have Boyfriend book it off. Likewise end of October, and mid-December.

I knew there was a reason I loved you, Ginger.

Leave the big lug and come shack up with me.

Yeah, but then what of Lady Chance and Baby Kate? I think they’d be the ruin of Dave within 24 hours.

Not for long- the arena will soon be renamed the “First Mariner Arena”. How pleasant

I know there is a music store called “Sound Garden” in the city. You’d have to look it up because I don’t remember where it is. I’ve found some interesting, obscure stuff there. I’d go there at least once.

Also, Record and Tape Traders is a great music store. Used and New, great selections, very cheap (compared to the crap at the mall). They also have apparel and accesories. And the people who work there are cool.

There are plenty of live bands- the big place around my parts for live bands is the Recher Theatre. It’s in Towson- I’d check it out sometime. They also have some very big (well known) bands play there- I’m actually seeing the band Galactic there in two weeks. Towson’s really nice, as someone else said. There are also plenty of great gigs in the city. I don’t know what your musical tastes are, but one of my favorite local bands is The Bridge. They play Bluegrass-jazz.

Oh- The best local band is Mary Prankster, BTW.

And all of you different Baltimore dopers posting here- how come you never come to MAD dopefests?

Skerri, I forgot. There is a Maryland community on Live Journal, if you’re a member. You can get lots of interesting info there, if you’re not nearly as old as Dave and I are.

Let me 3rd the vote for Mt. Vernon… especially if you are ever in the mood for fun with drag queens. Fells Point is nice… I adore Soundgarden and all the other cool shops down there. Got my cartilege pierced somewhere down there… sigh All this Baltimore, so little time. Oh, Weirddave dear why did you not do a Towson cheer at the mention of our alma mater’s town?

So what’s your job field, Skerri? Maybe one of us can help with leads…

For all your booze needs, you can cruise around the Beltway to the Loch Raven exit and visit the Liquor Superstore at Loch Raven & Joppa. It’s under the Ethan Allen store. It has everything.
You should try McHenry Beer. It’s quite tasty.

You need to go to Looney’s in Canton, on O’Donnell Street. Get a bowl of steamed mussels. It’s only $5, and then you can go play pool upstairs. Yes, it’s a divey-looking place, but it’s fun. Nacho Mamma’s is right across the street.

Welcome to Maryland, the Land of Pleasant Living! Please drive gently.

For the record, I’m 28, 29 in March. I’m a fogey compared to my boyfriend.
I’m a pharmacy technician, but right now I work in research. I make all the medications we use for drug studies. I’m pretty well versed in compounding, but I worked in retail pharmacy for 9 years before this.

Boyfriend got me listening to Mary Prankster when he came down here. He’s trying to convert me, folks, I promise.

No foolin’. You and boyfriend want to meet her?

I can guarantee it.

That would be cool! I just sent Boyfriend this link, so maybe he’ll get his third post in here somewhere.

She is one cool chica. She even lets Johnathan Chance and Dave into her airspace.

And don’t think we don’t feel priviliged.

One of her best lines I heard…

At a career day at her Junior High:

“Kids? Do you like travel and poverty? Be a musician!”

Hee hee.

I was slightly apprehensive about moving to Baltimore, because I was worried that it would be hard to meet new people. (Like I said, I’ve never lived anywhere but Charleston.) But every time I check this thread, I get a little more reassured that it will be ok.

You’re going to be a MAD, now.

And if you’re a MAD, you’re never alone.
