Just ban marriage, period. Right after religion. The world would be a much better place for everybody.
Um, no. Friend’s house got foreclosed. “They” are not buying a house. LIZ is buying a house. Friend’s got nothing but bad credit.
I am very sorry you’re in the position you’re in, but, financially, your friend is in the same position as you are. You, however, have the love and support of a life partner. Liz can take off anytime she wants and Friend would be homeless.
Except that transferring assets to avoid paying just debts to creditors is called fraudulent conveyance. Besides, even though you can change the deed holder (wife could give her half to husband via deed), no bank is going to let anyone off the mortgage repayment obligation, so if she signed the note, she’d still be on the hook.
If you outlaw straight marriage then only outlaws will have straight marriages.
Hey, that already happened in Spain, sort of.
The previous bout of Socialist government (mid-80s to mid-90s) had the bright idea to separate Catholic weddings from Civil ones. Instead of being able to get married in the church and have the priest handle your civil paperwork (he’d fill the certificate, get it signed by the couple and two other witnesses and file it with the court), the couple had to go file in person.
There was a sudden and unexpected upsurge on marriages among retired people. Suddenly, they could get married in the church (which was what mattered, from their emotions point of view) without losing her pension, as she was still widowed or single from the government’s point of view.
Somehow I don’t think that’s what Uncle Felipe had in mind
Nowadays you can choose to have the priest handle the civilian paperwork. Other churches also offer this; they need to get appropiate permits but I understand that’s not particularly cumbersome as Spanish paperwork goes.
I’m all for forbidding marriage, so long as nobody comes up with “moving together ceremonies” or suchlike. There’s people who’ll use any excuse to make their relatives wear nasty shoes!
