Band whose best-known song sounds like Pink Floyd

For years I would hear a song on Classic Rock radio that I would have sworn was Pink Floyd and I was surprised to find it was by some band I’d never heard of before. I can hear the song in my mind but for the life of me I cannot remember the title or the name of the band. It starts with some heavy guitar strokes, and the end has an effect of a European-type police car siren that sounds like it’s passing you, like the Doppler effect.

Can anyone identify the song and the band by this vague description?

“Lunatic Fringe” by Red Rider?

My first thought was Silent Lucidity by Queensrÿche but no Doppler effect.

I always thought “All of You” by Don Felder might just as well have been by the Floyd. It was in the movie “Heavy Metal”:

That’s it! “Lunatic Fringe.” I thought “Red” was somewhere in the band’s name but I couldn’t find anything by searching that gave me a clue.

Thank you! Not being able to remember this was causing me no end of anxiety, but I knew Dopers would come through!

I can certainly hear the resemblance. Sounds like a cross between Run Like Hell and Young Lust.

Huh. And here I was about to recommend D.O.A. by Bloodrock. It does have a siren in it and the beginning harmony of the chorus (i.e. “I … I … I … remember”) sounds exactly like Pink Floyd. However, I’ve never heard it on a classic rock channel.

“Lunatic Fringe” came to mind fairly quickly because I heard it on the radio a lot back in the day, and I would invariably think something like, Yeah, those guys have definitely been listening to their Pink Floyd records.

Glad I was able to help.

I always thought the guitar break/outro from Steely Dan’s FM sounded like it could be on a Pink Floyd album.

It sounds a heck of a lot like the first song I saw on MTV. Twilight Zone by Golden Earring.

ETA, I don’t think that was the version they showed on MTV (boobies).

And I still maintain he’s saying “lunatic French”.

Felder’s American accent takes the song out of the PF realm instantly, though.

Definitely not his best known song, but has some Floyd energy

That song reminds me of Twilight Zone by Golden Earring. When it’s on in the background, I keep expecting to hear the line ‘when the bullet hits the bone’.

Thank you, I thought I was the only one.
