Buckethead does not count. I mean, he’s just slamming out jam sessions, isn’t he? If not, he’s the clear winner and patron saint. I know no one who values his ludicrous output.
I wish some bands put out more albums. However, there are the rare artists that produce so much content, you want them to produce less so they could maintain the quality. Who should reduce their content amount because they don’t maintain the level of quality they are capable of?
Remember, this is bands/musicians you like.
Mine:
Soulfly - They have 10 albums, with only three of them being very good. Those three are the first one(self-titled), their fourth one(Prophecy), and their 7th one(Omen). Their albums have a couple good songs, but are not really ready for release. You could compile the other 8 albums into one long solid album.
KMFDM - In the 1990’s they released an album every year(well…nearly). Only half were good and only a couple were good all the way through. They continued their rapid release, slowing only slightly, in the 2000’s. Of the albums since their very brief breakup, only a couple have been solid albums. Many great songs, but they should slow down.
Who else should focus more on releasing quality over quantity, in your opinion?
Devin Townsend - Between 2009-2014, released seven studio albums, two live albums and two box sets. None of which were that good – had he condensed everything by cutting out the chaff there would be one, maybe two really great albums. Announced in 2015 that he was “taking a break” to recharge his batteries… and in 2016, released yet another album. :smack:
First one who came to mind. I really like him, when he’s on his game he’s fantastic, but he just doesn’t have any quality control so his albums are always hit and miss, with approximately a fifty-fifty quota. Funnily, the three albums (Cold Roses, a double album, Jacksonville City Lights and 29) he released in his biggest outburst so far all in one year, 2005, are all among my favorites, but then every second album he releases is a klunker like Rock’n’Roll or Easy Tiger where he sounds not far apart from the lame-ass streamlined mainstream rock of his almost namesake Bryan, and he can do so much better. Don’t know why I’ve been dumb enough to buy each of his albums from the start of his solo career up until a few years back, but that’s over now since I stream albums first when they come out.
Axl Rose/Guns ‘n’ Roses. Granted, they’ve only produced 1 album since 1993’s “The Spaghetti Incident?” but even that was a mistake. They were already legendary in their time, but they had a chance to be mythical and they blew it. It’s long overdue they just quit.
Smashing Pumkins/Zwan/Billy Corgan solo - (they all sound the same to me so I’m lumping them together).
Seriously Billy, you don’t need to record and release every single thing that pops into your head. One album every 5 years would be enough. And I mean one single disc, not a multiple disc album and not a metric shitload of accompanying B-sides.
I love Ryan Adams, including all the albums you listed as klunkers. But, come on, covering Taylor Swift’s entire 1989 album?
I can understand it though, because now he has his own record studio in his house, and that’s just all he does nowadays is record music with his friends and his band. Like Prince. Except, some of that stuff, Ryan needs to keep in a vault well away from customers’ ears. Like Prince.
