Bands that SHOULD be popular...

Didn’t Oingo Boingo do an album with a parody of the Boy Scout handbook on the album cover? I thought that was neat.

Agree about XTC, too, but I would recommend “Oranges and Lemons.” I never heard so many songs that blew my ears apart with its sonic swirls of wit, particularly “Garden of Earthly Delights” and “Across This Antheap.”

“Sonic swirls,” huh. I’m almost ready to start reviewing for Rolling Stone.

blushes well, um…

Anyway, check out this link to the Andre the Giant Posse website. It has a song I’d never heard before by The Slackers/Nods (right on the front page.)

Bah…people beat me to posting XTC AND The Slackers.

Guess I’ll nominate Fugazi, even though they have a fanatical following and aren’t mainstream by choice. They should still be more popular.

Totally agree. Japanese girl bands rule

Also, since he went solo, Frank Black (formerly Pixies lead singer) hasn’t got the attention he deserved. Most other Pixies fans I know haven’t bothered to follow his solo career. Shame. :frowning:

Dive

a little known band from Stockholm.

I’m putting in a vote for KMFDM, regardless of whateveer soundtrack they’re on. As far as I’m concerned, there are a number of really good movies out there with horrible soundtracks, and great soundtracks to horrible movies, so I don’t judge a band by a movie soundtrack. I have so many to movies I haven’t (or have ever had interest in) see(i)n(g).

“Tomb Raider”, for instance.

OK, time to do my proselytizing then…

Thanks to Gravity New album coming out soon, MP3 sample available at their website. http://www.thankstogravity.com

Ashley MacIsaac I hear he’s big in Canada (where he’s from) but can’t figure why he can’t seem to cross over to the US.

GO NOW, and find their music however you can. Ye shall listen to MP3’s that you steal from whatever music source you prefer, and then thou shalt be converted and feel the need to buy their albums. So it shall be.

(best starter song: Rain on the hill, Megabuster, or Real Eyesoar, best song: Birthday Suit)

I’m chiming in on Jets to Brazil, Delgados, Thanks to Gravity, Yo La Tengo, and definitely Shivaree. How can you not love a band that titles an album I Oughtta Give You A Shot In The Head For Making Me Live In This Dump.

And on to others that have not yet been mentioned…

Wheat Beautiful, soaring, majetic American rock/pop. Brilliant band.

Clem Snide Sort of alt-country, sort of pop, incredibly gorgeous songs. Lyrics that make you want to laugh and cry at the same time; poignant and yet ridiculous. And best use of bassoon I’ve heard in ages.

Rufus Wainwright Opera-trained singer, turned disaffected diva. With influences from Springsteen to Sondheim, he knows how to craft songs with deep emotional impact and irresistible hooks.

Low From their site: “Low is a trio from Duluth, Minnesota, who make very slow music. That’s not the only thing there is to their music, or even the most important thing, but it’s what you’ll notice first. Low plays songs stripped to their bare essentials: slow tempos, quiet voices, powerful lyrics, and minimal instrumentations.” Intense, quiet beauty.

And that’s all for now. But I’m hitting the record store hard this weekend, so I’ll let you know.

I agrree with this one. MDFMK was somewhat more of a “pop” band, but now that KMFDM is back together, they will resubmerge into the underground.

You have to give this band credit. They released one album every year from 1992-1999. Then, during 2000 when they were broken up, two new bands having half of KMFDM’s lineup released an album each. The only year without a KMFDMesque album is 2001. The new KMFDM comes out February 2002.
