Do you use a blacksmith to make tools? Also, I thought foresters only grew trees – do they also produce food?
Sorry, I got foresters confused with hunters; my mistake.
Also, blacksmiths can make iron tools or steel tools; the steel tools last longer, but require coal, which can only be obtained from mines or traders; they aren’t scattered across the countryside like iron is.
As in reality, location is important:
Housing should be close to workplaces but also within the radius of a market and joined by roads. Heavily travelled roads should be upgraded to stone when possible.
Fishing docks need as much water in their radius as possible, ideally on a peninsula.
Gatherers, foresters, and herbalists need as much flat land as possible, ideally where plenty of trees already exist.
Two buildings of the same type should not have overlapping radii. You do not want them to compete for resources.
I don’t see a tailor in your list. You need one to keep your citizens warm and a hunting cabin to stock the tailor with leather.
There are mods which double the amount of logs, stone, and iron obtained by clearing areas.
What is the purpose and benefit of markets? And that’s good to know for hunters and tailors – I didn’t know they supplied leather. My people have been doing without coats!
Markets mainly act as a distribution center for consumables like food, tools, coats, and firewood. Citizens like to hoarde such items in their homes if they don’t reside within the radius of a market.
And they waste a lot of time traveling to fulfill their needs. So instead of going to the hunter’s cabin, and then the blacksmith, and then the tailor, they just make one stop.
This seems a lot like the Caesar/Pharaoh/Zeus city builders from years ago. Would that be a fair assessment?
Really got the hang of the game over the weekend – my town has well over 200 people and is growing nicely, with big surpluses of food and every resource.
One of the mistakes I had been making was failing to stockpile enough food – I was growing too fast, while barely having enough food for everyone and starting a starvation spiral as soon as a disaster hit. Now I’ve got more than a year’s worth of food saved up and I only grow slowly, building houses only when I see people that have moved into my boarding house.
