Banner ads for *members*

I have never used this suckup phrase in my life, but you, Sir, are the man.

No she isn’t.

This is going to decrease revenue, and not increase it. A whole lot of people who otherwise had no complaint about the board are going to leave, possibly prompting others to leave too after the mass exodus in April, ultimately resulting in less money and more annoyance to everyone.

Ah.

Metaphorically speaking.

At any rate, back to the OP: Ads? What Ads?

That is the $1000 question. Isn’t there suppose to be a carrot to go with this stick.

Jim

Ok, I’m starting to see the ads, now. Wasn’t before. Obviously, implementation is now full.

Meh, I don’t think it matters much. I ignore anything like that anyway.

Wait for the first ad with sound.

Maybe that’s their plan.

Oh and I’m starting to see the ads now too. Not that I mind/care any more/less than I did when I made my last post in here.

Wow! Still haven’t experienced the sound, but the flashy banners suck.

On a related note, I sometimes get this crap(with sound) on my AIM. How do I disable this?

If we have to have them, can they be localised for those of us not in America? I don’t want to put my photo on a US stamp.

FTR, don’t bother me none. As for locali-S-ing them ;), I’d prefer non-local ads. I can see local ones anywhere. And everywhere. So much so that their value as an advertising tool is lost on me. More invisible clutter.

Anyway, I was at Radio Shack the other day already (needed a stereo-mono adapter) and I assume IE8 won’t come close to running in Win98.

Won’t be long before people get punished for telling others how to obtain and use Adblock on the banner ads too.

In other words, “I don’t know if it’s temporary.”

Nice use of the passive voice. Who made the decision?

I think he knows damn well who made the decision; it wasn’t voices in his head. I presume he was also told not to say anything about it, too.

Working for the Clampdown…

Why? Webpages get paid by advertisers by the average number of page-views right? Is there even anyway for them to tell if a browser is using adblock or similar programs?

Not necessarily - usually some of it is on clickthrough, some of it is if you buy something after clicking through - and you can’t do either of these if you don’t see the ad.

It’s technically possible in a number of ways, but I’m pretty sure nothing like that will have been implemented here - so all that’s happening is that your browser asks the server for the page, the server dishes it up and your adblocker snips out the bits that relate to ads before it is rendered to your screen - this does probably mean that requests to third party sites for images, banners, etc just aren’t being made, because your browser isn’t even seeing the code that refers to them, but I doubt if anyone is auditing that.

Which browser?
There’s lots of stuff in the Pit thread.

CMC +fnord!

If you are blocking the request to the ad server (which many people are doing) you are not earning the board money for the view. This is why it is usually not allowed to publicly discuss ad blocking methods.

I notice that I only see one category of banner ad – never anything that drops down and/or expands. What I see are all ads, with some animation, that stay in their rectangles, nice and unobtrusively once I scroll down a tad.

As for ads that make sound … I don’t use my computer to listen to music, or listen to much of anything online. My speakers are almost always off (perhaps that’s not a common way to surf?).

Anyway, ads that make sound are obviously a huge intrusion to people who surf while listening to music. Are those kinds of ads really necessary?

Can someone help me with Adblock? I installed Adblock Plus, restarted Firefox, and the banner ad is still there and although there is a little “block” tab at the top right-hand corner and a little thingy comes up that says “click here to block with Adblock,” it’s impossible to click on that little tab before it disappears. So the ad is still there and I don’t see how it’s supposed to be “gone.” Does anyone know if I did something wrong?

Um never mind, I think … now the ad changed and that one was blockable and now they seem to all be gone. Let’s hope.

I’ve don’t think I’ve ever been on a board that shows ads to paying members. Seems kinda weird.
