Dish! How do you change what the site thinks your browser is!?
Well, you could start reading here. There’s a plugin for Firefox users to make it easy.
I’m not tellin’ what OS & browser I’m using. Not in this thread, anyway.
OTTOMH There are at least 3 boards run by dopers. To avoid derailing the thread, or getting it locked for recommending boards other than the SDMB, I recommend that other Dopers inform you in private message.
Could someone send me a pm to the other boards please?
I just realized something, you guys. Maybe we’re all just being judgmental ninnies. Like, sure, there are banner ads, but maybe the plan was to make the board free. But now, we’ve all ruined the good will of our overlords and must be punished for our insolence.
I blame Zsofia. shakes fist
Maybe if we stop complaining and be thankful for the glory we have (while clicking on banners-- BUY GIFT CARDS!1111111111!!!), then maybe we can prove that we are deserving of at least basic customer service.

You are every politicians dream.

Just so everyone knows, I’ve emailed Ed Zotti to let him know how strongly people feel about the ads. Again, this may simply be a temporary situation, but I want you all to know we’re doing our best to make sure your voices are heard on this issue.

Why must you simulpost your niceness at the same time as my snarky? Stop trying to make me look bad, jeez!
(but seriously: thank you for looking into it and being helpful, Giraffe )
And Liberal: YES! Finally a good use for my Political Science degree! snoopy dance
Well without using any add-ons and just using the restricted sites under IE’s security tab, I am blocking ads so far by restricting http://media.chicagoreader.com/phpAdsNewer

Thanks, Giraffe.

Sorry. I could give you an unfair warning for no reason, if that would help. Or yell at you for something someone else posted?
Just let me know what I have to do to make things right and I’ll do it.

Thank you. This response dialed my rage-o-meter down by at least four notches. Maybe even five.
Well, honestly, they’ve done unpleasant things and have been defended by a number of members, so why not try more?
Agreed. Of course, while there are those who will support or at least not criticize the administrators no matter what their decisions may be, a large chunk of the voices popping up when the Google Ads were introduced were saying “At least they’re not graphical. That would be too much.” And, indeed, it clearly is for a lot of people.
The insane thing is, I’ll bet you anything the banners will still bring in a lot more than $15/year.

Thanks, O tall one. You are quite right that we feel strongly. I awoke this morning with no idea that this evening I’d be contemplating the possibility that my time at the SDMB could be drawing to a close.

Much appreciated.
I would never have seen the ads if i hadn’t been on campus today. The computer i was using has Firefox, but not AdBlock, and the first thing i noticed when i opened the Dope was a flashing banner ad. Until i saw this thread, i actually assumed that those banner ads were normal practice, like the Google ads.
Because i can’t actually see them on my computer, the presence of the ads doesn’t affect my enjoyment of the Dope, but their presence is still worrying, even more so when combined with TubaDiva’s, ahem, less-than-sympathetic attitude.
Wow. This once hallowed place has sunk into the bowels of the web one bitch-slap at a time until now it’s flashing lights and screaming whistles. What’s next, spyware?
Oh, I’m sure they’ll go with “Contextual Linking” before the spyware. Gotta kill them slowly, dontchaknow.
eta: I haven’t gotten any sound enabled ads yet, but I’d be pretty fucking pissed if I did. Don’t blame people at all for being pissed. Can’t believe they expect people to sign up and pay for that shit.
