I agree. The new banner advertisements are annoying. And they’re all American-centric and therefore of no use to us non-Americans. At least the Google ads at the bottom of the page are customised for Australia.

Well without using any add-ons and just using the restricted sites under IE’s security tab, I am blocking ads so far by restricting http://media.chicagoreader.com/phpAdsNewer

Okay, I just browsed around to random threads, that is all it took. If you are IE users and this banner ad crap evolves, PM or Email me and I will share the simple techniques for blocking these ads.
BTW: I have left the Google ads up on purpose and even occasionally clicked on them knowing it was an easy way to earn a few pennies for the SDMB.
I have sponsored many dopers so far.
This Banner Ad with sound shit is 100% unacceptable and all dopers should block it. Bullshit decision without some form of notice and explanation.

How about you just call me a few creative, yet insulting names and we’ll call it even?

Smelly fart flag. Dirty douche water. Queef.
[QUOTE=mhendo]
Because i can’t actually see them on my computer, the presence of the ads doesn’t affect my enjoyment of the Dope, but their presence is still worrying, even more so when combined with TubaDiva’s, ahem, less-than-sympathetic attitude.

On a board with almost constant gripes concerning performance, it seems a little strange to bog it down with the burden of running banners. Unless, of course, user satisfaction was a secondary concern.

Blocking the adserver worked for me, much thanks. Still think it’s absurd to bog this fragile fucking place down with ads.
Thanks, Giraffe. My setup is keeping most of the ads from animating, but that may be why I keep getting page errors and loading problems. Please add me to the list of long-term members who usually don’t complain about the board but will be watching board performance closely and deciding whether to resubscribe. This addition makes the board slower and more cumbersome (not to mention being distracting).
Jim, I want you to know that I’ve followed your helpful tips and as of right now, I’m also banner free.
So I 'preciate ya honey. And I swear if anything intrudes on me listening to Alice…
Another thanks to the 'raffe. Not only are you a bad ass, but I’m sure your breath never stinks and you can knot ties with abandon. [ ::: high five ::: ]

Well, for IE7 users, there’s IE7Pro. It’s free, and has gotten good reviews.

I was just going to suggest that. I have it installed on my comp, and it is a good extension for IE7 users.

I completely agree with this. The fact that they have sound makes things much, much worse.
I post very infrequently now, but I’ve continued to subscribe since the board went pay. Ads with sound for paying members is enough that I’ll consider not resubscribing just because of the principle of the thing. Hell, even for non-paying members, ads with sound are unacceptable.
Blocked and will stay blocked.

adds in another call for the alternate sites
It just occurred to me that TPTB saw that Jerry needed to fix a little glitch and decided to see if we teeming millions would mind very much if they slipped another revenue stream in here.
Maybe they figured if no one complains about it, they could make it permanent, while if it gets a negative response, they’d back off.
If that’s so, they’re probably monitoring this right now to see the level of outrage.
Okay, in case you’re monitoring, I’ll chime in.
This isn’t what I paid for when the board went to paid memberships. If the ads stay, I go.
You all can go back to ranting now.
ETA: Yes, I’d consider paying more in place of the ads.
Thank you for forwarding on our annoyance, Giraffe. Hopefully someone, somewhere will listen to our complaints.
In the meantime, I’d like to state that my PM box is open for links to the other boards if someone wants to share.
kthxbye.
If this continues I will not re-up. There are other pay-to-post message boards that I occasionally read. I will give my money to them as they promise to make adds go away with membership.

I love you.
Okay, so cancel that, now I’m getting the ads. No sound. It’s a fucking slimy move whether I have to suffer them or not.
Everyone you are most welcome.
In case I am missing any, can someone also PM me the other boards. I think I know them all, but maybe I will have a pleasant surprise.
