I have a problem with it. See Giraffe’s post in this thread. That was the proper response. TubaDiva basically gave a politely worded ‘screw you’.
NETFLIX! M-FKNG NETFLIX!!! The banner ads most likely to push me to start bombing corporate offices, and I get to see it on every thread! This is taking it up the ass, plain and simple.
I don’t think there is anyone who does NOT have a problem with it. It is just that what do you say to someone who just told you is not interested in what you think?
You know, one of the original reasons for going to subscriptions was the advertisements don’t work (which has notably been edited out since then). You can’t have fucking both! This is fucking bait & switch.
Speaking as someone else who has posted for over five years on other boards who used to have flashing, talking banners at the top, on the sides, and on the bottom, I find it very hard to get worked up over this, especially since I don’t see any ads on here in the first place (I’m using IEv7). Even if I did, though, Would I still come? Yep. Would I still pay? You bet. I’m used to flashing banners and ads. I don’t mind them. YMMV.
You also have to consider what this type of thing means for subscriptions. It’s a forum where people look down their nose at you for being a guest, you have to pay twice as much as the oldsters, there are Google ads at the bottom of every page and now flashy talky ads at the top. Yeah, I’d sign up for that.
Yep. I’m not a big fan of mod-bashing, but I get the sense from a lot of Tuba’s posts in board-related threads that she often feels an adversarial relationship with the board’s users; hence, we get stuff like this, where she is preemptively admonishing people for taking offense to information that she is just now revealing in that post.
I mean, I am quite sure that modding this place is a thankless and often stressful job, but dude, if you’re feeling that burned out about it, maybe it’s time to take a break.
I don’t even mind the banner that much, but I’m listening to Howard on Sirius and all of a sudden I hear a commercial. I couldn’t believe it was coming from the Straight Dope and I had to close the window. C’mon guys, this is bullshit and you gotta knock it off!
So here I am all set to get pissed like everybody else about the banner ads. ( I get them on FF without any adblockers)
Except for the fact that the ads I am getting are pretty damn innocuous. No flashy lights, no getting bigger, no sound. My photos on postage stamps and a free cookbook is all I get.

This goes along with the ads at the bottom of the threads. All I ever seem to get is Bushism ring tones, and lately one asking me to sign a petition about cluster bombs. :rolleyes:
I mean how can I work up a good head of pissed off when I can make the banner ad disappear with 4 clicks of the scroll wheel? How can I be expected to spew venom if I don’t see the damn thing, and it refuses to intrude into my doping experience?
Dammit, I want to be part of the offenerdi. I want ads that piss me off like you guys get. I want, no I demand, that I get the really shitty ads, so I can be part of the in crowd.

I’m running Adblock and haven’t seen the ads except in the screenshot. If they start showing up for me I’ll be slightly annoyed.
BUT.
UNEXPECTED NOISES COMING FROM MY COMPUTER are a dealbreaker. I am trying to work here, and I don’t expect to hear sounds unless I motherfucking ASK for them.
Little Google ads? OK. Ads that YAK at me? Oh, not so much.
On the other hand, if I have to blow this popsicle stand I’ll probably get a lot more work done.
Heh, fuck off! I still don’t get any banners, and I ain’t on IE 5 here at home. IE7 with the pop-up blocker on and all the Active-X shit off and I still ain’t seen anything except the screen cap Diosa posted.

Nothing. Not an ad in sight.

Firefox, no Adblock. I see the banner ad, but it doesn’t flash or shake or jiggle.
Thank goodness. Because that’s one of only two kinds of Web ads that drive me nuts. (The other is the kind that take up half the screen if your cursor should happen to catch a corner of them.)
I can deal with banner ads, no matter how big or brightly colored, that stay in their place, don’t flash, and don’t hide the text of the thread.
I’m not gonna say anything about anything. I’m running something and I do use a browser. But I’m not saying. I’m just saying.

That’s the dealbreaker for me, too. I almost always surf with music playing, and if things are going to make noise at me that I haven’t queued up, I too will take my sandbox and go home. Surfing with webnoise is not an option.
(I’m not seeing or hearing anything at this point, either. Fingers crossed it stays that way.)
