Barbie - Teaser Trailer

And now presumably Greta Gerwig and Warner Bros are trying to figure out how to write a sequel.

And why not? They’d make a killing. I’m just not sure where they’d go from here storywise.

Your wish for sequels shall be granted, although they’ll surely not match the hype of Barbie.

It’s not my wish for Barbie sequels, but that of the studio execs, who can never leave a good thing alone. In my opinion, most movie sequels should never have been made The Back to the Future sequels, for example. On the other hand, Godfather II was a worthwhile sequel.

Just saw this over the weekend and liked it a lot. Very Funny. I was discussing it over dinner and giving some criticism about the monologue and themes being too on the nose. My friend pointed out my criticism was basically what the monologue was pointing out: it’s impossible to meet expectations. And while that can be an unfair shield of criticism, also point taken.

So Oscar noms are out!

Barbie nominated for best picture and Gosling gets a nom for best supporting actor. Nothing for Robbie or Gerwig.

This performance art by the Academy, right? A pathetic attempt at humor?

What actress and director should be removed from the nominations?

No idea, but it just seems…odd? Unfortunate?..that a movie with such a strong feminist message and made such a cultural splash, especially with with women this year, receives two Oscar nods for Ken but none for Barbie or the woman who was lauded for the manner in which she brought it to the big screen.

Ken agrees with you:

They managed to nominate Greta at the Golden Globes if memory serves.

I think Ken had the best performance. But yeah, it’s a bummer.

Gerwig did get nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay (Along with Noah Baumbach).

So what does it take to get nominated for best director, if not creating the most original, talked about and successful Moviefilm of the year?

Historically speaking, having a penis helps. But specific to Barbie, I imagine some voters felt like they were juggling a lot of options, and giving her credit for the co-writing of the script was enough,

You have to be funny, but not too funny. You have to really want the award, but never act like you do or say that you do. You should make a statement with your film, but not piss off a large portion of society, especially fragile men. Always stand out and always be grateful. But never forget that the system is rigged. So find a way to acknowledge that but also always be grateful…

Sounds similar to America Ferrera’s speech in the Barbie movie. Ironic.

(taps microphone) “Zat is zee joke.”

Finally saw this yesterday. I’ll eschew an overall assessment other than to observe that I suspect I was not the target audience.

But I have to ask about that final line. I asked my wife to explain it, and she said, “It was just funny, because she doesn’t have a vagina.” I didn’t really see how that was funny, but she had really enjoyed the movie, so I didn’t want to yuck her yum.

I had asked, because I was confused. If she lacked genitalia, why would she go to the gynecologist. If she had obtained/developed a vagina, how did that happen? Before when she and Ken went to the real world, they made a point of observing that they lacked genitalia.

And no, I’m not trying to impose some rigid rules on a very mane-believ movie. But even in fantasy, ISTM there ought to be SOME rules/expectations/explanations.

Is there a source - maybe the writer/director - explaining that, in fact, Barbie became anatomically correct? Or was it explained somehow when she was sent back to the real world, that it would be with “alterations” to allow her to be a “real person”?

I’m truly happy so many people enjoyed the movie so much. My opinion really doesn’t matter. It is unfortunate in a situation like this, where one person REALLY LIKES something and wants to share it with someone close to them, and that second person is less than enthusiastic.

I (and I suspect most) people took it as the opposite: She was now a “real woman” (versus a toy) and thus had a vagina. Counterpointing her earlier comment when being sexually harassed that she didn’t have genitals.

Barbie : Do you give me permission to become human?
Ruth : You don’t need my permission.
Barbie : But you’re the creator. You… Don’t you control me?
Ruth : I can’t control you any more than I can control my own daughter. I named you after her, Barbara. And I always hoped for you like I hoped for her. We mothers stand still so our daughters can look back to see how far they’ve come.
