Franklin Gutierrez of Cleveland hit a ball to third. The ball takes a funny hop, eats up the third baseman, and hits him in the gut. He loses track of the ball and spins around in confusion.
The ball went between the buttons of his jersey and he had to reach in and fish it out.
I just watched that particular highlight on mlb.com. It was the Nats’ third baseman Ryan Zimmerman.
It was pretty amazing; just one of those things that you can’t do very much about. Of course, if one were being really harsh, one could argue that it never would have happened if he got his glove in front of the ball, but it was taking a pretty high hop, and getting his body in the way was the right thing to do. He was just extremely unlucky that it popped inside his shirt.
Of course, it didn’t end up hurting the Nats or helping the Indians very much, with Washington going on to win the game 4-1.
