It’s like that scene towards the end of For The Love Of The Game, when Kevin Costner’s character (Billy Chapel) completes his perfect game against the Yanks, and even the super-obnoxious Yank fan in the stands stands up and gives him props, and encourages others to do so as well.
My favorite part of that movie: He’s just thrown the perfect game, he goes back to his hotel room, and bursts into tears.
Beurhle grew up not far from me. My sister-in-law taught at his school district. It’s nice to see a local guy hit it big. Good for him!
Well, I guess the Cards are going for it this year. Can’t say I’m a big fan of trading Wallace for a few months of Holliday (and am not sure he’ll be worth the money it’ll take to extend him). To have to throw in even more prospects makes me like the deal even less.
Of course, if the Birds make the playoffs and make a run then it’s all worth it, I suppose.
Yeah, I don’t get it. The De Rosa deal made sense, but I don’t see how this or the Lugo trade really helps the Cardinals. They’re already a good enough team to have a decent shot at making the playoffs, and what they need to give them an even better shot is a starting pitcher to replace the weak link (Wellemeyer) in an otherwise solid rotation, and a really good hitter to protect Albert Pujols (which they seem to think Holliday might be, but he doesn’t look that impressive).
As an A’s fan, I liked the move. At 16 out we don’t have any realistic shot this season, we desperately need some impact players in the infield, and we weren’t going to get compensation picks for Holliday unless we offered him arbitration, which was looking like a $16 mil price tag which he might very well take considering the current market.
But for Cards fans - don’t let Holliday’s #s this season deceive you. He had an extremely slow start and was hitting in a lineup without one other above average hitter. And lately he had been absolutely mashing the ball. Stick him ahead of (or behind) Pujols and he will rake.
I think I like the Holliday deal. I do hate to see Wallace go for a rental. But, as HoboStew says, Holliday’s been hot lately. And, at least part of the motivation for this deal is showing Pujols that they’re serious about winning, so he’ll want to stick around. If Pujols’ tacitly (or even directly - who knows) indicated to the team, “Add a bat or I’m gone in 2011”, then maybe the Cards spent Wallace for a few more years of Pujols’ services in addition to whatever they get from Holliday. I can get behind that.
Fucking Reds! Fucking Reds! Sound the alarm, we’re gonna have a fire sale here! Woot, woot, woot…shitty goods for sale, who wants Bronson Arroyo’s $10 million dollar contract? Anyone? Anyone? Going once, going twice…
Ah fuck.
Is it NFL season yet? I’m a Bengals fan, and am eagerly anticipating a return to the Superbowl so I don’t have to suffer any more.
Okay, I stand corrected (as I sit here listening to tonight’s game). Bayard, you make a good point. I know Pujols likes it in St. Louis but wouldn’t stay and play for a team that wasn’t in contention. As for the Lugo deal… well, I guess with the addition of Holliday, it really doesn’t make sense to keep Chris Duncan. If that’s the best they could get for him, fine.
Tigers take the double header. 2 games in first in the Central.
If you were the Tigers GM, would you be buyers or sellers? If buyers, what and at what price? If sellers, what would you sell/keep?
Not sure why you think this is strange. The swine flu has infected quite a few Americans. Statistically, a baseball player was pretty likely to get it eventually, and the Rangers are in a part of the country very close to Mexico, where the virus has been coming from.
