Your thread for all things baseball-related as we enter the dog days of summer!
Some factoids to get you started (all as of July 2)
Best Team: Los Angeles 50-29
Worst Team: Washington 22-54 (ouch)
Strongest Division: AL East; four teams over .500
Weakest Division: The NL East, probably, whose division leader would be fifth in the AL East despite getting to play Washington
Big Slugger: Albert Pujols has 30 homers, six more than anyone else
Not So Much: Minnesota has THREE players with at least 100 at bats who have slugging percentages below .250; Nick Punto, Matt Tolbert, and Alexi Casilla
Don’t Like Hotels: The Orioles are 24-20 at home, 11-23 on the road.
Don’t Like Home Cooking: The Phillies are 13-22 at home, 26-14 on the road
Presently, We Are The Daddy: The Red Sox are 9-0 against the Yankees.
Catch!: Both the Twins and Blue Jays have team fielding percentages over .990; if they can keep it up they’d be the first teams to ever do that in a full season.
Good win by the Reds today. At 39-38, they are either on the brink of destruction or making a run. Going into a weekend series at home against Bayard’s Birds will sure be telling.
They own their division: Texas Rangers 15-4 against the AL West.
The Rockies should have fired Clint Hurdle two years ago. For some reason, the owners accepted that a hot streak leading into the World Series meant he was a good manager. He should have been gone before then. I’ll be astonished if he gets another managerial job.
My Brewers need another starter…they really really do…anyone on the market?
How about Bronson Arroyo for Prince Fielder, straight up?
You want Doug Davis back?
I’ve experienced two new parks in the last week, and am looking forward to another one this week.
I went to Dodger Stadium last Saturday to see the Dodgers play Seattle, and a couple of days ago i went to see the Tigers and the Athletics at the Oakland Coliseum. Over the next week, i’m going to catch at least one, and possibly more games in San Francisco. I’ve been coming to San Francisco regularly for about 6 years now with my wife, and in all that time this is our first summer visit when the Giants have not been on a road trip.
To Southern Yankee, whenever he gets in here:
Yes, the red caps are a “Fourth of July Weekend” thing. (Do not ask me why red caps celebrate the 4th of July. I don’t know.) The Jays also wore theirs on July 1 in Toronto with their Canada Day getups, so it’s just a whole darn week of patriotically ugly caps.
Not on your life
No, we need a good solid starter since one of em is in AAA, and the other is a bullpen guy who has barely any experience. Just a simple 2-3 ERA guy would be fine.
Thanks to mhendo for coming back for me in June… Gotta flip that calendar. Pretty good game today. Burnett pitched a strong 7, and Tallett did well too. First of 4 straight day games for Yanks and Jays. Was not a fan of the red caps.
How about Todd Wellemeyer?
10 games out for my boys in oakland. Considering our staff is comprised of all first & second year starters and we can’t hit our way out of a paper bag, things could look much worse. Unfortunately, unless we put together a nice run soon, I see a fire sale in the near future, which is going to really suck because we don’t have any valuable chips except for Matt Holliday, who A) isn’t exactly setting the world on fire and B) is in a contract year. Not getting a lot for that I imagine.
Shit, Tigers had Minn. 6 to 0 and now it is 7 to 7 in the 7th.
Crappity fuck. The Tribe is pounding the A’s and I just can’t get excited about it. Cuz it’s the A’s, and we’re still gonna suck next week.
Wow, the Diamondbacks suck on defense. Atrocious.
I’d take him…he’s solid enough for me
Depends on what you’re asking for him
Today’s Phils-Mets game was a pleasant change from the way the Phillies have been playing lately. Rollins and Madson seem to be coming back from wherever the hell they’ve been. I’m betting - and certainly hoping - that now that Rollins seems to be coming out of his slump he’ll perk the whole team up and they’ll be able to maybe even win two home games in a row.
Unbelievable 8th inning meltdown by the Reds. Up 3-0, with two on, Rhodes walks (in four pitches) a guy who’s never had a major league hit to bring up Albert Pujols.
Whom of course promptly hits a grand slam. Why not walk in the run and face the next guy? Why give the best hitter in MLB whom has a phenomenal hitting percentage with the bases loaded a chance to do that? Especially against David Weathers, whom Pujols has owned?
Fuck.
