I know this has been stated before, but if he’s clean (and I’ve not heard ANY whispers or rumors that he’s not,) we’re watching one of the all-time great players in his prime. I have the MLB package on my cable system to watch the Yankees, since I’m out of market, and I try to catch as many Pujols at bats as possible.
Yeah, he’s pretty awesome, which is precisely why I don’t think you pitch to him in that type of a scenario. I mean shit, we had clawed our way offensively to a 3-0 lead, had a GREAT outing by Homer Bailey ruined, game lost in the 8th inning…with one sweet swing of Uncle Albert’s bat. True, we did manage to tie it 4-4 later, but ended up losing anyway.
It’s a play like that that really takes the wind out of a team’s sails.
Almost everything that could go wrong for the Yankees in 2009 has, as talk radio hosts have been telling us all season.
And they’re STILL just 2 games behind the Red Sox.
The Yankees are definitely a flawed team with too many old guys… but they’re not ready for the scrap heap just yet.
I wasn’t able to follow the game last night. I saw the score at 3-0 in the 8th on my cell and figured the Reds were going to win. Later that night, I saw my brother looking at his cell, and I asked him the score. When he said 7-4, I thought he was lying to me. He likes to kid around. He hit a couple of buttons and announced, “Pujols hit a grand slam.” Oh, well, of course he did. It had been a few weeks since his last one, so he was due. He passed Musial for the Cards’ team grand slam record.
Too bad he didn’t have a chance to do it again today. The Reds pulled it off.
Yanks in 12! The Sox lost again too, so their lead is down to one.
Holy crap! 8 games into a 9-game road trip in which they’ve visited the three teams with the best records in baseball, my injury-riddled Seattle Mariners and their patched-together, makeshift lineup are 5-3, to get themselves back to 4 games over .500 and 2 games out of 1st place in the AL West
2 out of 3 vs the Dodgers, 1 out of 3 vs the Yankees, and now they’ve taken the first 2 of 3 in Boston.
Here’s hoping for a sweep!
Casey McGehee NL rookie of the year?
So the Yankees took the 3rd straight from the Jays. They had to come back from 8 - 4 to do it, but they are hitting the ball pretty well these days. Acevedes pitched an excellent 4 innings in relief. On the other hand, Wang is back on the DL, and I really don’t have any confidence in Chamberlain. He has the stuff, but every time I watch him I think, more and more, that he doesn’t have the mental toughness. Maybe he’ll mature, but I just don’t see the ability to bear down. He rarely last past 5 innings, so he’s a bullpen killer. I’m not giving up yet, but I’m not on the Joba bandwagon.
All I have to say is…goddammit, Reds. Just goddammit.
And fuck you, Bronson Arroyo, for your maddening inconsistency.
23-year-olds have a long way to mature.
I don’t know Joba Chamberlain personally, but maturity does come with experience. Stuff, generally, does not. I know this; when Roy Halladay was 23 he had the worst season in the history of baseball for any pitcher who pitched at least 50 innings. Within a few years he won the Cy Young Award. So you never know.
I hope you’re right.
Jesus H. Christ.
As if the Orioles’ starting pitching isn’t shaky enough, the very least the bullpen could do is hold onto a four-fucking-run lead when they’re handed one. I’m looking at you, Danys Baez and Matt Albers.
To me, the most amazing thing about the game is that the Cards scored 10 runs without a single RBI from Pujols. Lately he’s has been providing all their offense, so it’s good to see the rest of the guys carry their weight for a change. When I saw the score, I assumed Pujols had launched at least one into the Ohio.
FINALLY. Outside of Molina and Rasmus, there has been almost no offense besides Albert. And to echo FoieGrasIsEvil, why any one pitches to Albert is beyond me.
We were at the game last Wednesday against SF (2-1 Cards win, hell of a pitching duel between Wainwright and Cain) and they walked Albert in the first inning. Everyone booed lustily and then confided to the person next to them, yeah, well, I would have walked him too if I was managing.
Sir T-Cups:
I’ll bet the Royals will take offers for Kyle Davies, maybe even Brian Bannister.
Ryan Braun? Is that you?
OK, so was Jonathan Broxton’s meltdown yesterday a fluke, or a sign that he still does not have a closer’s mentality? As much as I hate to say it, I think it’s the latter. And poor Billingsley. Talk about getting robbed of your 10th win!
I’m grateful that we still managed to take the series from the lowly Padres, but this was not exactly a stellar weekend for the Dodger bullpen.
He’s already been intentionally walked 29 times, a staggering number. He’s on a pace to blow away his own personal record (34, set last year) and set the highest total ever by a player not named Barry Bonds. He’s already - remember, his team is only just done half the season - got the 13th highest total ever.
(They didn’t start counting those until 1955 so I don’t know if anyone knows how many someone like Babe Ruth got.)
A very good week for the Texas Rangers as they dominate the Rays and the Angels. Beating good teams at home is exactly what you need to do, With the return of Josh Hamilton, the Rangers should be in contention the rest of the year.
